First name / Friend!

Have you heard of the theory that families have secret languages?  Like phrases, nicknames, or theories you talk about that nobody else knows?

One of the things we talk about in our family is The Mush. It's an idea taken from the movie A Bronx Tale. To mush yourself is to jinx yourself, specifically in the way that you count your chickens before they hatch so much so that they spill out of the basket onto the ground in a million yolky pieces.

The other night, in the week of pre-birthday celebrations (yes there were several!), my husband and I got gifted a reservation at one of the best restaurants in Brooklyn.  We already had a babysitter because we were going to another party later that night, and so dinner fit right into our schedule.

“How lucky are we that we get last-minute reservations to our favorite restaurant? And that our kids are funny and cute… And we live in a place that we absolutely love… And that our businesses are thriving?” I exclaimed over plates of pasta and gelato. (Ok, maybe the pasta and gelato were fueling my excitement.)

“Way to mush us!” he replied. We went back and forth about the line between deep gratitude and jinxing yourself, and he agreed to come around to my side.

I thought long and hard about this.

What is the line between humility and grand appreciation of the life you’ve built? On which side do you want to be between following superstition and the idea that being outwardly grateful makes what you have, grow?

If knowing that appreciating what’s going on makes it flourish even more, then the danger of not appreciating and celebrating creates a world in which you stay exactly where you are.

Not to mention, it is also waaaay less fun.

So, sure, you can be nervous about saying how good things are aloud could put a spell on them. But on the other hand, you can believe that celebrating wins and being grateful multiplies the good that’s around.

I've seen this happen for my clients many times over – so that's my stance and you bet I'm sticking to it!

xx, Leah
