Field Notes from Farm Manager Hannah:

Hi members,

Welcome to Brookwood's CSA program! Whether it's your 1st or 18th year with us, we are happy to have you as a member of our community for this upcoming season. My name is Hannah, this is my 2nd season managing the farm and I have been working at Brookwood since 2019 in various roles and capacities. I am joined by Deven as Assistant Manager, Megan as Farm Administrator, and our wonderful staff of Rachel, Sharon, Al, and Bonnie. We are also thrilled to host interns from Milton Academy for the month of May - Madden, Jackson, and Charlie. With our team we have been able to accomplish lots since starting in the greenhouse back in March. We have tilled the fields, spread compost and fertilizer, put down landscape fabric, pounded in stakes, transplanted and direct seeded dozens of different crops, cultivated, weeded, irrigated, and much, much more. We had a successful Seedling Sale the first weekend in May and hosted several different school and corporate groups for farm tours and work days. As many of our returning members know, we were challenged by the severe drought in 2022. This year we have adapted our practices to hopefully mitigate effects of drought conditions such as installing additional irrigation systems and trying a new crop rotation at different sites. We are excited to begin our CSA this year with greens from our fields in addition to organic beets and carrots from Brookford Farm in New Hampshire. As the early season picks up you should expect different varieties of baby greens, crunchy radishes and peas, bountiful bunches of kale and collards, cabbage, beans and more! Thank you very much for your support! Looking forward to the season ahead.

4 medium beets, roasted and sliced
2 cups mixed salad greens
1/4 cup crumbled goat cheese
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Wrap the beets in aluminum foil and roast them for about 40-50 minutes until tender.
Allow the roasted beets to cool, then peel and slice them.
In a large bowl, combine the mixed salad greens, sliced beets, crumbled goat cheese, and chopped walnuts.
In a small bowl, whisk together balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Drizzle the dressing over the salad and toss to combine.
Serve as a refreshing salad.
