When he had led them
out to the vicinity of
Bethany, he lifted up
his hands and blessed them.
 While he was blessing them,
he left them and was taken
up into heaven. Then they
worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

Luke 24:50-52

Let us hail the King!

Forty days after Easter, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Ascension (this year, we celebrate on Thursday, May 18!). It is the day that we remember Christ ascending the throne in heaven, seated at the right hand of the Father, all authority on heaven and earth is given to him, and all things are placed under his dominion.

This day is the festival of Christ’s enthronement - the completion of what we celebrate at Christmas, an inverse Great Exchange: whereas at the incarnation we marvel that God debased himself by descending to earth and taking on human flesh, at the Ascension we marvel that he glorifies human flesh by ascending in it to heaven.
