Hello First name / Friend,,

This week we’re back with William Warrener, Head of Academic Programmes at 64 Million Artists.

“For this week's creative challenge, I would like you to give yourself a gift from the future (or is it the past?!). With the amount of energy we devote to juggling our everyday lists of responsibilities, plus the time we spend worrying about whether we're getting closer to our goals and ambitions, we could all do with a penpal helping us to stay grounded and cheering us on. But what if that penpal was...you?”

Take 15 minutes to write yourself a message on a blank postcard or piece of paper.

You can write whatever you like, but importantly your message should include:
  • 1 pledge: what's a goal or dream that's really important to you? It can be work or personal - anything you like. Write yourself one action, a pledge to yourself that will bring you closer to that goal.
  • 1 reminder: what's one way that you can help yourself to stay grounded, happy and rested? A practice you have, a value, or even something you'd like to start.

Once you've written yourself the message, sign, date it and add your own address. Swap your message with a friend who's also completed the challenge, or someone you trust - that person will post your message back to you in six months time or within a time of your choice, reminding you of the pledge, reminders and messages of self-love that you've created today.

Or you could hide your postcard somewhere in your surroundings, like between a book or under some furniture, to stumble upon in the future!

“I love this challenge as a way to remind us to both challenge ourselves and be kind to ourselves. The six month lag between writing it and getting it sent back - once you've completely forgotten about it - creates a beautiful effect of realising how we can all be our own best coach and cheerleader.

This challenge is an activity that we often use at the end of our leadership programmes, helping participants to carry their reflections past the lifetime of the programmes themselves.” - William
