Many pre-emerge treatments have been on 30 days or more. With recent moisture, weeds are starting to break. For Xtend® traited acres, 3 pt/ac Warrant® + 30 fl oz/ac Roundup PowerMAX® 3 + 22 oz/ac XtendiMax® is the treatment to handle existing and future weeds. The residual of Warrant® requires moisture to activate, while the residual of XtendiMax® is active immediately, covering you in varied weather. If not using XtendiMax®, use Roundup PowerMAX® 3 + Warrant® and consider incorporating with irrigation if possible to activate the residual. If you don’t have a pre-emerge on yet, the first tank mix listed will be an excellent choice. Some may also want to avoid PPO herbicides close to emergence and when there is rainfall to splash it on the beans. |

It is time to start thinking about Palmer amaranth. It might feel early, but looking back in notes, we had Palmer emerging in mid-May back as far as 2017. Do not be afraid to start posting corn at V2-V3. Our best post tank mix is 40 fl oz/ac Harness® MAX + 12 fl oz/ac DiFlexx® if there is emerged waterhemp (upper photo) or Palmer amaranth (lower photo). We can up the Harness® MAX rate to 48 fl oz/ac on small corn to help insure we get to canopy closure. Do not put off post applications in corn. A week of rain or wind can get you behind, and once we are to V6, it becomes challenging to get coverage on weeds partially hidden by the corn. |

Rain, wind and high speed planters cause challenges every year in getting all the corn sprayed with a preemerge before it is emerged. Once the corn is up, the first thing to do is grab a cup of coffee and read the labels for ALL the products in your tank. Focus on the words DO NOT, we don’t put that on the label for fun. Using the TriVolt label as an example, it says “• DO NOT use COC, or MSO with TRIVOLT HERBICIDE applied to emerged field corn.” If fertilizer is the carrier it says “Sprayable fluid fertilizer as a carrier is not advised for use with TRIVOLT HERBICIDE after crop emergence unless typical fertilizer burn symptoms on the crop are acceptable.” The DO NOT’s are clear cut, the “not advised unless” are trickier. It isn’t new that fertilizer burns corn, but it is best to remind everyone involved that this can happen. More and more we run into tank mixes with 7+ products in the tank. No company has done research on some of these mixes. Spend the time to know what you are applying and if it is meant for emerged crops. |

While checking on corn emergence, keep an eye out for cutworm feeding. If you see 2 - 4% of plants are cut below ground or 6 - 8% are cut above the soil surface and the cutworms are under one inch long, apply 1.6 fl oz/ac Baythroid® XL. As soybeans emerge, watch for bean leaf beetles. One damaged plant per row-foot is enough to warrant a application of Baythroid® XL at 1.6 fl oz/ac. |
