The Biggest Challenge: Marketing 🤯
It seems like one of the biggest problems we face while trying to productize services and build out lucrative shops is warming up an audience and effectively marketing our products. “Passive” income requires a heck of a lot of effort to make sales.
As Kate Christy so eloquently put it:
“Marketing is the biggest ‘Gotcha’ of being a designer.”
Building something people will buy ✨
Another topic was how to build something that people want and will search for on the interwebs. The solution? Specificity. Rather than building something for everyone, building a product to address a specific problem seems to be the answer.
Sales Tactics 💲
Another hot topic was whether timed discounts are ethical. The consensus? Timed offers provide a much needed incentive. While discounting expert high ticket services may devalue your work, discounting low ticket items seems to feel ok. If you're not comfortable with that providing a juicy bonus can be a great alternative.
Double Dipping 🥸
One attendee shared a secret tactic: building the base of templates while working with a 1:1 client. In other words, double dipping to make the most of your time – and this comment got an audible “Ooooh that's smart!"
Where to Share 📣
One thing that was pointed out was that targeting communities filled with your specific audience may be more effective than sharing to the entire universe.
