Welcome to Notes From Natty - our standing Friday morning coffee date (inbox style of course) where you get a weekly digest of stories, writing tips and a round up of the latest at Natty Writes. Grab your cup (I’ve got mine ☕️) & let’s dig in ⬇️

I added the item to my cart on Amazon probably 20 times in the matter of one week.

As I was scrolling Instagram and watching TikToks (back when people were dancing to Savage 🤪) I noticed that so many people had these and naturallyyyyy I thought I needed one, too.

The item in question?

A tie dye sweat suit that took the Internet by storm in 2020, of course!

You know the ones:

I’m typically pretty hesitant when it comes to clothing trends (hence the adding to my cart 20+ times without ever checking out).

I spent hours scouring the Internet for the perfect one, but never did bite the bullet and press “purchase.”

Wanna know why, First name / friend?

Because I had a prettyyyy good feeling that trend was going to last about as long as the instant gratification that engagement on social media posts give us.

You see, if I would’ve pressed “purchase" on one of those, in maybeeee 3 months I would’ve been left with a $30+ sweat suit that I would probably never wear again and that quite honestly looked pretty similar to something I could’ve DIYed in my own backyard. 🎨

(If you loved or still love the tie dye sweat suits, I promise the purpose of this newsletter isn’t to tell you to stop wearing them.)

I’m much more interested in helping you see how blogs are the more timeless choice when it comes to marketing in your business.

They’re like the white high top Converse that you’ve had since high school or your Old Navy denim jacket that, in the words of Miss Swift, ✨ never go out of style.✨

Ways to Work With Me This Summer
I’m all for social media being a TOOL that you use to grow your business, but what makes me physically ill (okay maybe not really, but just let me exaggerate ok?) is when I see people using it as a lifeline to grow their business.

If their engagement is low, they’re freaking out.
If the followers aren’t flooding in, they’re wondering how they’ll make sales.
And if their story views are down, they post 10x more with the hope of getting their numbers back.

I feel exhausted just reading that, wbu?

Here’s the thing about putting social media on a pedestal like this: you aren’t Mark Zuckerberg…

Which means that you have ZERO control of what happens to your social media content, your followers or the platform as a whole.

What you DO have control over is the content on your website (aka your blogs).

If you are only building your business on platforms you don’t own (like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, etc), what will you do when the owners of those platforms decide to do away with them completely?

Prioritizing your owned channels (like your website and email list) protects you if or when that happens!

And here’s the really cool part: when you start with your blog content FIRST, your content creation for other platforms actually becomes WAY easier, which allows you to work smarter not harder and actually enjoy social media for what it is instead of viewing it as the end-all be-all to your business growth.

In this week’s blog post, I show you EXACTLY how I’ve followed this process for my own social media content so you can see how my blog posts truly guide all of what I do!
Writing Tip of the Week
Delete the fluff.

When you’re writing, you might be tempted to include a lotttt of detail that actually doesn’t contribute to your main point.

It can also be tempting to drag out a story wayyy longer than it needs to be for the sake of filling a page.

Too many details and unnecessary information is what the copy world calls “fluff” and it’s gotta go if you want to keep your readers engaged.

The fluffier your content, the longer it takes someone to get to your call-to-action, which means they probably won’t take the action at all!

So, after you’ve written something, whether it be a blog post, email or social media caption, walk away from your computer and come back a few minutes (or hours) later to edit.

The best way to catch fluff in your content is by reading it out loud – as you read what you’ve written, you’ll likely catch words and even full sentences that can be removed!
