But the saints of
the Most High shall
receive the kingdom and
possess the kingdom
forever, forever and ever.’

Daniel 7:18

What's the Deal with Saints' Days?

Alongside the Liturgical calendar, the Church celebrates a second calendar: the Sanctoral Cycle. These are days set aside for specifically remembering those of especially great witness.

We see in the saints who have gone before us a variety of gifts and broaden our understanding of both the diversity and the unity of the church. As we celebrate the Sanctoral Calendar, we notice that, like God’s Kingdom, it reflects the witness of Christians from all continents, socioeconomic statuses, races, languages, and denominations. In addition to spurring us to excellence in our walk with the Lord, a celebration of the saints prompts fresh wonder at the gift of the gospel being for every tribe and tongue.

As inheritors of the Kingdom of Heaven, we are of this great lineage: we claim these faithful as brothers and sisters in Christ. Their lives, devotedly lived in sacrifice to God, offer us encouragement, hope, and inspiration as we seek to likewise walk faithfully with the Lord. Let us remember them with joy.

of Colossians 1:2
Pray
Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit you have made us one with your saints in heaven and on earth: Grant that in our earthly pilgrimage we may always be supported by this fellowship of love and prayer, and know ourselves to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy; for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whom all our intercessions are acceptable through the Spirit, and who lives and reigns with you and the same Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
