BOOK CORNER WITH DR. NEWMAN | 03
Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life with the Heart of a Buddha
June's selection is Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life with the Heart of a Buddha, by Tara Brach Ph.D. Dr. Brach is a psychologist who also specializes and teaches Buddhist philosophy. Her emphasis is on empowering people to discover that they are enough, and not be burdened with a sense of insufficiency. She notes that most of us live in a perpetual trance of unworthiness. Our habits of feeling insufficient are strong and run deep, as it doesn't take much (hearing of someone else's accomplishment, being criticized, getting into an argument, making a mistake at work) to make us certain that we are not okay-and there is something wrong with us. The principles of radical acceptance are contained in stories and accounts that are woven within the author's own journey to find basic goodness and a forgiving heart. This book is to be read slowly and revisited. It invites us to reawaken ourselves and find the fundamental joy and freedom that comes with letting go. Happy radical reading!
