Reading Recommendations for the Long Weekend and a Giveaway
Happy Memorial Day Weekend! If you're like me, you're probably struggling to believe we're already at the end of May. School ended Thursday for my kids, so we are officially at the start of summer. Maybe that means you're off somewhere this weekend for the start of relaxing. Or maybe you're like us and sticking close to home. Either way, here are some book recommendations as the summer begins.
Also, if you remember, I am in heavy edit mode this weekend on the book that releases in August. You can preorder it already! Gulp! I love this book, but if I'm honest, the edits are kicking my behind, so I covet your prayers as I bring Charlotte's story in for a landing this weekend/week. Thank you! (And yes, this is the book I wrote really fast in April.)
Now for the book recommendations!

I really loved Rachel's In Spotlight and Shadow. This was my first read of 2023 and an EXCELLENT start. Both storylines grabbed me, and the way they connected was magical and compelling. You will fall in love with Elise and Sophie. And Pittsburgh's history is layered in such a fun and interesting way into the story. From beautiful writing to swoon worthy heroes, this book has it all. Oh my heart. I loved the audiobook. The narrators did a wonderful job with the characters and story. Authentically Izzy is a love letter to books. Epistolary with a twist, I found myself captivated by the story even though I wasn't sure I'd enjoy the email as communication. Yet it was such a vivid way to get sucked into the characters and their journeys. Halfway through I may have texted the author to ask when Luke is going to get his own book. This is such a wonderful story. I highly recommend it to lovers of romantic comedies with big doses of heart and discovery.

What a richly layered story. Set in the 20s in New York City, the heroine, Dr. Lauren Westlake, is an Egyptologist at the height of public fascination with Egypt thanks to King Tut. A woman ahead of her time, she just wants to preserve the past through her work and make it understandable. But then an old friend asks her to help identify forgeries. Detective Joe Caravello is determined to bring those behind the forgeries to justice, but finds a devious web of deceit and layers that put others at risk. Add Lauren's father appearing and The Metropolitan Affair is a book I inhaled in two days. Highly recommend for lovers of atmospheric historical novels laced with romance.

I adored When the Day Comes, the first book in this time travel series, and In This Moment did not disappoint. Maggie has inherited time travel from each of her parents and finds herself living three lives: 1861, 1941, and 2001. Each is a year marked by war, and each is filled with people she loves. But she knows on her 21st birthday, she has to decide where she will stay. It could be jarring to travel back and forth between three time periods, but because the story is told solely from Maggie's POV, I felt incredibly connected to her journey. I cared as she navigated the journeys and experienced challenges in each life. A compelling read with wonderful characters and depth. Highly recommend.

Memory Lane was an enjoyable romance to a place I would love to visit... what happens when you take a hero with amnesia, a heroine who's hiding from the world, and a mystery? Add a dash of attraction, and you have a sweet romance from one of my favorite authors. I really enjoyed this novel set in Maine. It has the rich characterization and heart I expect from a Becky Wade novel.

Have you read Across the Shores? If so, would you consider leaving a review? Reviews help authors in so many ways not the least of which is when a certain number is obtained, then retailers start letting other people know about the book. The algorithm is a mystery, but if you've read the book and would be willing, leaving a review is such a great help to authors. Thank you!

I loved writing about the Atlantic U-Boats and Coast Guard story set during WWII! You can learn more at my website and find links to your favorite retailers.

Need a good listen?
I've been so happy to chat with several fabulous authors on my podcast “Book Talk” this season. Have you listened? If not, it'll be worth your time! These authors have so much to offer and I hope you enjoy the chats with them as much as I do. We're continuing to drop a new episode a week through June, so it's been fun talking to my writing friends as we prepare.

Y’all, I had so much fun connecting with my friends Misty Beller, Gabrielle Meyer, & Roseanna White. They each write historical fiction set in different time periods. Gabrielle Meyer’s latest In This Moment is set during the beginnings of the Civil War, WWII, and the days leading up to 9/11. Roseanna White’s A Beautiful Disguise is set in 1909 with an acrobatic set of aristocratic investigators — such fun. And Misty Beller’s Rocky Mountain Rendezvous is set during the trader’s rendezvous in 1837. After marveling at how much these homeschooling mamas who have each written more than 30 books have in common, we quickly turned to their books and how they developed the ideas for them. Idea sparks are a key part of the writing process. Often for the four of us, our best ideas for new books and series come from the research for the next series. And if you listen very carefully, you might just pick up an idea of what’s coming next for each of these talented authors. I enjoy each of their books and can’t wait for you to meet them!
