After I dropped the kids off at school yesterday morning in a haze of smoke from wildfires, I couldn’t help but feel my chest tighten, bringing back memories of the beginning of the pandemic. As the sky got darker and more orange throughout the day, it pushed my sense of anxiety even higher. Anxiety is a weird one for me as I’m one of the least anxious people I know. (I don’t say this as a brag; candidly, on the other end of the spectrum, depression is always something I’ve struggled with.) I’m married to a VERY non-anxious person to boot. So non-anxious, in fact, that he was nicknamed Crush, the turtle from Finding Nemo, by one one of my cousins. So as I was figuring out what to do with my tight chest as well as advising some of my clients on how to deal, here are some things that came to mind: - Phone a friend. It’s always easier to share what you’re feeling than keeping it to yourself. Other people are probably feeling the same way.
- Exercise if you can. Get those good endorphins going. And in the absence of being able to walk or run outside, my friend Eve teaches amazing classes on the Obe app.
- Meditate – this isn’t always my go to but when the time calls for it (yesterday!), it can really do the trick. The Calm and Headspace apps are great for beginners.
- Sauna blanket it up. It's one of my favorite things. It regulates my nervous system like nothing else.
- When all else fails, junky TV – #IYKYK.

Some other things that have been going on this week: - My little baby turned 10!! I have no idea how the time passed so fast, and it’s really hard to process that it's been a whole decade since becoming a mom. I feel very lucky that he’s such a sweet, smart, and hilarious kid.
- It's my New York anniversary! It has been 20 -- yes, 20! -- years since I moved to this city. I have so much more to say about this – maybe a newsletter for next week.
Hope this helps a little and that the smoke passes soon! |
