The Legacy of Juneteenth

This coming Monday, June 19th marks the Juneteenth holiday,
also known as “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day”

Learn more about this important event in United States history
courtesy of the Minnesota Historical Society and Dr. Yohuru Williams

Originating in 1865, the date commemorates the end of slavery and the
Civil War within the United States. Upon the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, Union Major General Granger and his troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation; originally written into law by President Abraham Lincoln more than two years prior.

Today, celebrations take the form of family gatherings as well as city-wide events to reconnect with our communities while honoring this important moment in history

This past February, Juneteenth was established as an
official state holiday by Governor Tim Walz
