First name / friend, does the idea of trying to find an editor terrify you? If you said yes, you’re not alone! There are a lot of editors out there, and the industry isn’t regulated in most countries, so it can be hard to know who to trust and where to find good ones. The good news is I can help! The first step is knowing where to look. Below you'll find a few different places you can look for editors. |

Where to find the pros: Professional directories Though industry isn’t regulated, there are professional organizations where you can find editors who've committed to being a part of a professional body. Here are a couple: Reedsy Reedsy is a company that helps indie authors by providing resources for writing and connecting authors to professionals who can help them, like editors, ghostwriters, designers, and more. There’s a standard you have to meet as an editor to be listed on their website, so this is a good option if you’re looking for quality. Other authors If you know someone who’s worked with an editor, they probably have thoughts! Word of mouth is a great way to find an editor because you can ask the author about their experience with the editor, what their rates are like, and if they’d work with them again. Instagram What’s great about Instagram is that you can get a feel for an editor quickly. Often, an editor will talk about the genres they edit and offer writing advice, which helps you decide if they’re a good fit for you. Just be sure to check out their website or search for them on the professional directories to find out their credentials. |

What next? I always advise authors to check out a few editors to see which one clicks with them. Usually, a person's online presence matches who they are, but you never know if you'll be a good fit in person, so it's good to have a couple options. Mini challenge: If you’re thinking about hiring an editor, my challenge to you is to find three who edit in your genre and check out their websites. |

Next week, I’ll talk about how to approach an editor and how to decide if they're for you! Best wishes, |
