Soybean White Mold
Summer solstice was June 21st, which marked the longest day of the year. Soybeans initiate flowering as the days shorten. As such, the time for white mold fungicide applications is here. Fungal spores released from apothecia, saucer-like mushrooms, infect soybean flowers which eventually drop into the canopy and produce the namesake white filaments. Consequently, fungicide applications must occur during flowering to be effective against white mold, ideally R1 (beginning flowering).  Delaro® Complete and Delaro® 325 SC fungicides are effective against white mold. Delaro® Complete contains two effects sites of action against white mold, prothioconazole (Group 3) and fluopyram (Group 7). Delaro® contains a single effective site of action against white mold, prothioconazole. Prioritize irrigated fields with white mold history. White mold is strongly influenced by free moisture in the canopy, ergo irrigated fields remain at risk even during drought. Likewise, bottom ground fields where fog persists well into the morning hours are at elevated risk for white mold outbreaks. Lastly, fields previously in corn with a white mold history in soy are at risk too. Sclerotia, the resting structures, can persist in the soil for several years, thus rotation to non-host species is largely ineffective.  Fungicide applications at R3 targeting foliar diseases such as frogeye leaf spot will be discussed in subsequent articles.

Stem Borer
Dectes stem borer adults have and continue to emerge in Eastern Nebraska. Adults deposit their eggs into the soybean crop and larvae bore into soybean stems after hatching. In turn, fields infested by Dectes stem borer are at greater lodging risk.  In Nebraska, Leverage® 360 insecticide is labeled for adult Dectes stem borer. If applying Delaro® Complete or Delaro® 325 SC fungicides for white mold, consider adding Leverage® 360 to reduce risk if Dectes stem borer has historically been a challenge. Dectes stem borer has a long emergence period; therefore, growers should weigh whether a standalone Leverage® 360 application targeting Dectes stem borer is justifiable.  Additionally, it is important to monitor fields where Dectes stem borer adults were observed. Look for leaf flagging in August and split suspect stems. If fields are heavily infested, consider early harvest to minimize impacts from lodging.

Corn Growth Stage

A lot of corn is shorter than normal for the growth stage it is at.  This photo shows what to look for when splitting the stalk to accurately determine stage.  Yield can be reduced significantly when herbicides are applied past the labeled growth stage.
