Its summer time and we can't think of a better way to spend it than outdoors with our wine community! In this newsletter we will spotlight a wonderful local winemaker, talk about some summer fun with EVT, and include a schedule for some great wine events.

Brandy and Ari Grey are the owners of Greywing Wines.

Brandy’s parents retired on 2.5 acres outside Newberg, OR in 2008 with the intention of planting vines. They put in about 300 vines of Pinot Noir propagated from local vineyard cuttings. Looking for a more sustainable lifestyle and wanting to move beyond a career in community newspaper journalism, Brandy decided if the family was going to grow grapes, then someone should go to school for winemaking. While studying winemaking at Chemeketa in Salem, she transitioned into being a Tasting Room Manager eventually landing at Fairsing Vineyard where she has been for the last 7 years. By 2014 the vineyard produced our first small vintage and the 2016 vintage was our first to be labeled and poured at events.
Ari fell in love with wine and the Willamette Valley tagging along to Pinot Noir tastings with Brandy. Now he shares vineyard management duties with Brandy’s dad and assists in winemaking. He eventually left advertising to work in tasting rooms, rising to Director of Hospitality at Open Claim Vineyards.
We are intentionally small - producing about 100 cases per year. Everything from the vineyard to bottling is done completely by hand including putting our sparkling rose into tirage.

We tied our last name, Grey, with the Oregon state motto: “She flies on her own wings” in naming our brand. Not only did it tie us to our love of the wildlife found in the Valley, but also felt like a connection to the name of our family vineyard, Blackfeather.
Johnson Blackfeather is Brandy’s Shawnee and Cherokee ancestor and fought for the land rights of his people as Principal Chief of the Shawnee Nation after returning from battle as a Union soldier in the Civil War.
We want to use our platform as small producers to amplify Indigenous causes and history. Native stories are frequently forgotten when telling the story of the land, but as the storytellers of each vintage it is our responsibility to honor the environmental stewardship of this land of the people who came before us. Very often, their efforts are why we are able to enjoy the bounty of this beautiful place. In addition to continued learning on how we can all do a better job at that .
We donate 10% of all sales to Native nonprofits, predominantly to Nations on the lands where we were raised in the Southwest as a way to give back to those communities.

Greywing Wines
2019 Sparkling Rosé

Notes from the winemaker:
This soft, cranberry hued zero dosage sparkling wine fills the glass with aromas of ripe cherry and strawberry jam. Delicate bubbles accentuate flavors of watermelon, roasted red fruits and orange zest. Good length and round mouthfeel, this Brut Natural shines by itself or with any dish served with good friends.

Local Events
Oregon is home to an active and exciting wine culture. Throughout the year, a number of wine related events take place right in our backyard. It is our goal to spread the word and support our local wine community while introducing individuals to a side of wine that they may not have seen before! Remember that some of these events may require the purchase of tickets in advance.
