In the words of my friend, Mike Keleher, "Nothing is more rich in life than to know you are needed."

Each email, calendar invite and outstretched arm is a gentle reminder that you are both needed and loved.

In a Life of And, summer is controlled chaos. It’s a tug-of-war of priorities: kids’ activities, birthdays, parties, national holidays, speaking, camps, play-dates, work and cookouts.

It’s easy to get frustrated by the constant change and lack of “normal.”

I’m working in this season to choose my perspective. To make the inconvenient trip to catch my daughter’s volleyball game. To slide down the waterslide with my littles to hear them laugh. To take everyone to Nana’s house for cousin time and ice cream cones. To pop a 10pm pizza in the oven for a late night gathered around the kitchen island eating after swim practice.

I’ve found that I can make more time for relationships in my life by simplifying the ordinary, day-to-day tasks.

Here are a few simple tips on how to own your ordinary so you can have time for the extraordinary in your summer:
  • Hire a neighborhood teen to mow the lawn (even once a month can be a treat)
  • Pay your kids to clean the house (pick a specific time and price so it’s contained)
  • Do a date-night swap with your friends (you’ll watch their kids when they go out and vice versa)
  • Clean out the toy room to make old stuff new again (and, it’s simpler for the kids to clean up)
  • Stock your car with sunscreen, bandaids and water bottles so you’re ready for 30 minutes at the park or pool in a moment's notice
  • Grab ice cream after dinner for a treat

The Hubs always reminds me that not every decision is forever. You can do what works for you now and change it up later.

Let's embrace the busy seasons, own the summer, and create unforgettable moments together!
