This is a great question! Greenhouse gases include things like methane, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and even water vapor. Greenhouse gas emissions are measured by something called CO2e, which stands for CO2 equivalence. It accounts for all of the common greenhouse gases in terms of the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide. To find the CO2e of a certain mode of transit, we use emissions factors to compare their environmental footprints. Each mode of transit has an emissions factor that actually depends on where you are located in the country. In the front range, walking and riding your bicycle are the most sustainable ways to get around- they have a zero emissions factor! Carpooling has the smallest emissions factor other than walking or biking. Riding the light rail has a higher emissions factor than carpooling, but still less than using the bus. However, the bus has a smaller emissions factor than driving your car by yourself. Driving your car alone has the greatest emissions factor for transits that are common for everyday commute. |
