“Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy. To do nothing and have it count for something. To lie in the grass and count the stars. To sit on a branch and study the clouds.”

This Month in the Garden

My August garden in two words. Fading fast.

The hydrangeas are literally fading in color. They are no longer the vibrant, electric pinks, purples and blues of June and July. The colors are moving into a lighter hue. It's as if nature is telling me that the party is winding down and we're shifting gears into another season. It's a warning shot. We're not done yet, but things are changing. By the end of August, the hydrangeas will turn a rust color. They don't need Vogue to tell them it's time for autumn shades!

The Rose of Sharon comes into it's own and that is one shining star in the garden right now. I love that concentration of white blooms. Funny enough, they don't do very well if you cut them to put in vases, so I tend to leave them on the bushes.

LIVING
The Hamptons
My first experience in the Hamptons was not what you'd think. I was expecting my first son, living in NYC and too far along to fly home to Texas for Thanksgiving. My husband and I decided to drive out to the Hamptons and stay in a darling B&B in East Hampton. We were smitten, even off season, and that began a decades-long love affair with the East End.  We're about to head that direction for a few days, so I thought I'd share my short list of favorites, plus a few places on my radar. Lobster is a big theme for me while I'm out there! Bostwick's has the best lobster tacos. And, Duryea's makes a lobster cobb salad that I dream about!
