August 2023 vol. 1

As we've shared in previous newsletters, we've been faced with a grass shortage here at Amber Oak Ranch.  However, I'm pleased to report that the 66-acre parcel we've leased, which you may remember me mentioning before, is proving to be quite helpful. Even though we've recently harvested hay there, it still has a good amount of grass left - enough to buy us a few extra weeks of time. So this past weekend, we initiated a mini-migration of our cows to these greener pastures.

Moving cows isn’t so bad if you have the right equipment.  Good loading pens and a large trailer make the job less painful.  However, you have to know how to use the equipment.  Everything was going smoothly on the first 3 trips, and I must have gotten a bit complacent as I loaded up the last load.  I was headed out of the driveway and headed up the street when something caught my eye in the sideview mirror.
Imagine my shock when I spotted three calves standing in the middle of the roadway!  I slammed on the brakes, throwing all the cattle to the front of the trailer, jumped out of the truck, and ran back to find that the sliding gate had opened up.  After quickly closing it before more cows escaped, I turned to see 3 young calves making a break down the road.  As we’re on a busy state highway, I couldn’t leave the truck and trailer to chase them so I jumped back in and took it up the road to a driveway.  With the truck securely parked, my next mission was clear - to get those calves off the road.
Finding themselves in the middle of the road, the calves were a bit confused, so they didn’t get too much of a lead on me. But as soon as the noise and motion of approaching vehicles registered, their instincts kicked in and they took off sprinting. Fortunately, they were heading in the right direction.  I was hoping I could run them all the way back to the ranch, but they found an open gate at the neighbors and decided to take a shortcut.  I breathed a sigh of relief knowing they were off the road and somewhat secure – so I thought.
After catching my breath, I got back in the truck and turned around only to find the calves had found a hole in the fence and made their way back out onto the road.  This time they ran past our gate and were heading away from the ranch.  Pulling into the driveway I started off on another sprint down the road.  Fortunately, out in the country this is not an uncommon occurrence, and an early church goer pulled over to lend a hand.  Special thanks to the lady who, in skirt and sandals, braved the ditch and cut them off.  Once the calves were headed the other way, she had the sense to jump in her car and cut them off before they ran past my gate.  With me bringing up the rear, we were able to run them up the driveway and back to a secure pasture.
Reflecting on the chain of events leading up to this near disaster, it seems likely that when I attempted to secure the sliding door, I must've missed the pin hole, allowing the gate to vibrate open. Additionally, the whole experience was a rather stark reminder that I need to get in better shape.  If I’m going to be racing against cows, I need to start working out more.  If anybody has a personal trainer, I may need to enlist their services.

On that note, we’ll be processing 3 steers next week, so If you’re looking to fill your freezer with a side of delicious grass-fed & finished beef give us a ring.  We provide a turn-key service, walking you through cut selection and delivering directly to your freezer.  This is a great way to save on great beef.
