With so many different shapes and designs in this quilt, these blocks serve a special purpose.
They are here for rest - they allow somewhere for your eye to focus while moving around the quilt.
They are here for balance - their large shapes allow you to fill any gaps in your quilt. Overwhelmed by pink? Add some blue and green. Feel like all your POP or compete with each other? Add some softer, background fabrics or basics
They are here for favourites - I so often cut my fabric up little, I loved using these prints to show more of a print I loved!
I feel like I've asked you to pull out all your blocks every month and see what you need! But here I am doing it again. ;P Some blocks are fun and sparkly and interesting because of the way the shapes go together. These blocks are more like a blank canvas. When I look at the quilt below, all those busy, interesting blocks blur around, and my eye immediately moves to the larger shapes. I'm so glad I brought out my favourite feature prints, and some bigger basics like ginghams that just get lost in smaller pieces. I'm also glad I used some basics in there too for contrast and the occasional POP of colour.
If you're still working on other blocks, or you've put your quilt away for a time, don't feel like you have to leave these ones till last. Perhaps the encouragement to pull out your favourite fabrics and use them here is just the cue you needed to come back and make some more progress. It's amazing how quickly 21 blocks come together, and you start to get a feel for your overall quilt.
