what is powerlifting?

Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift.

Now that we are all clear on what powerlifting is, it's important that we talk about who can do powerlifting and what it means to compete in a powerlifting competition.

If you can squat, bench and deadlift the bar - you can compete and train in powerlifting. This sport is for everyone and it's one of the reasons we continue to host competitions at New Roots and encourage our athletes to participate in, regardless of age, gender, size, experience, and perceived strength.

It can be incredibly empowering to train for strength and we've seen first-hand the benefit that it has had in people's lives.

Q: “Should I wear a belt?"
Jesse's Hot Take: Yes. It's a common misconception that people think using a weightlifting belt is for safety purposes, when in fact it is a tool to help increase trunk stability while abdominally bracing resulting in greater power and strength. So go ahead and throw a belt on - preferably one that looks cool.
