Transmissions from Seattle
Summer 2023 Edition
Hello and welcome to the Summer edition of transmissions from Seattle!

The past couple months have been full of travel between Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City and beyond. This year more than others has afforded many opportunities for in person meetings, which have been incredibly invigorating-- there's nothing I love more than sharing ideas over way too much iced coffee.

With that said, the second half of summer feels very much like a crucial idea incubation period after laying creative foundations for new collaborations and motion projects in the first half of 2023. Seattle feels undeniably kinetic at this moment in time and I am so grateful for the amazing and diverse community here.

Now for some photographic updates…
A Historic Night with Joni Mitchell for The LA Times
For The LA Times, I travelled east to the Columbia Gorge a little earlier this summer to photograph Joni Mitchell's first publicly announced live performance in years. Among the luminaries that joined her on stage: Brandi Carlile, Annie Lennox, Sarah McLachlan, Lucius, Marcus Mumford and more. Here's a link to the coverage by Mikael Wood and Amy Kauffman.

A Coach Accused, Again and Again
A lot of trust and care went into this difficult but important investigation by Gus Garcia-Roberts, which opens up a bigger conversation about the role of regulators, colleagues and parents in protecting young athletes from abusive coaches and toxic training practices.

The allegations against Groom, which have not previously been reported, provide a window into how the promise of Ivy League admission and other accolades, together with a disjointed regulatory system, combine to allow alleged abusers to thrive in the multibillion-dollar youth sports industry despite much-touted reforms.

Here's a paywall free link if you'd like to read the investigation.

Things Are In Motion

I've added a cinema camera to my kit and have expanded my editorial work to incorporate video. Interviews, b-roll, moving pictures-- anything to enrich the story, let's make it happen! I'm also Part 107 certified for any projects that could benefit from an elevated visual perspective.

Sarah Bond for Fortune
Image item

I skipped over to the east side with my assistant to photograph Microsoft executive VP Sarah Bond for a feature on up and coming CEOs for the July issue of Fortune Magazine. Bond oversees Xbox and came dressed to the nines in the company colors. Read the feature here.

Summer Sights

I spend a lot of time on the road shooting editorial work for clients and as much as possible, try to keep my eyes peeled along the way. Life on the west coast, especially this time of year, is full of beautiful sights and colors.

Ken Jennings' Favorite Seattle Spots

For AARP, I spent a couple days driving around Seattle photographing some of Jeopardy champ Ken Jennings favorite spots in town. Some of these places included Scarecrow Video (incidentally one of my favorites!), Le Pichet, Phinney Books, Ballard Locks, Magnuson Park and more.

Sculptor Nancy Mintz for Luxe

A portrait of poet Jane Wong at the studio for High Country News. Read the story here. Jane has a new memoir out called Meet Me Tonight in Atlantic City, which I have a copy of sitting on my coffee table and can't wait to read.

Marcus Lalario is Behind Every Scene
For Seattle Met, I spent some time alongside art director Jane Sherman with Marcus Lalario and friends, a bevy of Seattle luminaries, for a deep dive on his influence in Seattle the past few decades. Here's the story.

Personal Work

I first met Arvin on a shoot at Communion in Seattle after photographing the restaurant for a New York Times roundup of the best restaurants in America. He popped into the studio a while back for a series my friends Kristina Capulong and Jovelle Tamayo were collaborating on for Filipino American History Month.
