Dear friend,
Do you ever find yourself seeking a better work and life balance? I know I do, as a mom of three kids, wife, life coach, entrepreneur, among other responsibilities I carry. This desire to find balance within our lives is really our attempt to feel balanced.
Not long ago I had a coffee date (lavender, vanilla latte is my fav) with a fellow ambitious woman who is making major strides in her life and career. She recently got married and has begun prioritizing her health by exercising and eating more healthy. Plus, she opened her own medical practice which took overcoming some major fears. It's going great and she's living life on her terms. I mean seriously, bad bitch alert 🚨!!
She’s not stopping there though, which is the thing about growth - it oftentimes continues to bloom far beyond your original intentions. It becomes a way of life. Her next goal is to become a mom. So she asked me how I find balance in my work and life. How do you do it all? Like I’m being interviewed by Oprah and I have found the secret elixir to life’s great mystery. I so badly wanted to give her an expert piece of advice. Instead, I took a deep breath and told her the truth. It’s hard and I don’t know that I have the answer to a perfect work and life balance.
Truth is, it’s more about adjusting my expectations than balancing it all. Sometimes, I’m in the midst of an epic workflow moment and one of my kids comes into my home office and needs me (maybe they're hungry, they have hurt feelings or simply need a hug). There’s part of my brain that thinks, “OMG, I don’t have time for this and I am constantly being interrupted!” For me the balance comes by also reminding myself that, “being a mom is my favorite responsibility and they need, trust and love me - what a blessing.” I soon feel myself calming down, I make eye contact with my child and listen. I am able to honor both my work and life, but not always at the exact same time. It takes a lot of intention.
