lets
explore!

Established in May of 1990, the Rattlesnake Museum features the largest collection of different species of live rattlesnakes in the world. This is fitting since more species of rattlesnakes can be found in the Southwest than anywhere else on the planet. They are an animal conservation museum & receive several hundred rescues a year. In addition to live snakes, you'll find artifacts & memorabilia that illustrate how our lives, environments & planet are influenced by these & other animals that are often feared & misunderstood.

The museum, established in 1997, tells the story of the history of telephone communication. In addition to vintage phones, you'll also find all sorts of photographs, historical displays, & literature from the earliest times of the telephone industry. I enjoyed seeing the first list of telephone numbers for Albuquerque. The museum spans 4 floors of exhibits in the original, historic 1906 telephone company building & includes a hands-on Learning Center. You will definitely learn something here that you didn't know prior to your visit.

The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History was established in 1969 as an intriguing place to learn the story of the Atomic Age. The museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate & is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Visitors to the museum can explore both the history & how nuclear science continues to impact our present-day lives through permanent & short-term temporary exhibits & displays.

The Museum of Anthropology, now the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, was Albuquerque's first public museum. It was established by the University of New Mexico in 1932. In its over 90 years of existence, the museum has amassed archaeological & ethnographic objects, collections & archives that document human history. Alongside the two permanent exhibitions, People of the Southwest & Ancestors, the museum also partners with the community through educational programs & temporary exhibits.

Tinkertown Museum began as a traveling exhibit in the 1960-70s, then became a one-room museum welcoming 943 visitors in 1983. Today, tens of thousands visit the Sandia Park site that has grown to 22 rooms. It was constructed over time by Ross Ward with more than 50,000 glass bottles, carved wood & repurposed collections. You will feel like you've taken a step back in time at this eccentric museum. This is one of New Mexico's truly unique experiences; the space is sure to inspire child-like wonder for all ages & is one of my very favorite places to share with out of town visitors.

The Meteorite Museum, located on the Main Campus of the University of New Mexico, has been a major educational resource for UNM & New Mexico school students since it opened in 1974.  The meteorites housed in their collection have been available for study by researchers both within the UNM community & worldwide. Many of the samples are from the Institute of Meteoritics, the first institute in the world devoted to the study of meteorites created here in 1944.  It is open when student employees are available so you'll want to check before you go.

The Santa Fe Reptile & Bug Museum, founded in 2013 as Harrell House, became a nonprofit in 2022. This interactive educational organization is home to live bugs as well as reptiles, amphibians & fish. They also feature their Crawlywood Collection, a 3000+ preserved insect display. This is a favorite destination for school field trips & birthday parties. They also offer a mobile version that makes visits to schools, museums & homes in the community. They have welcomed more than 70,000 visitors to date.

The Museum of International Folk Art was founded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett (1881-1954), who donated more than 2500 objects including textiles, costumes, ceramics, wood carvings, paintings & jewelry. Their collection now houses more than 130,000 examples of folk & traditional arts from around the world. The museum is comprised of the Hispanic Heritage Wing & Contemporary Hispanic Gallery, the Girard Wing, the Neutrogena Wing & the Gallery of Conscience. They offer a multidimensional learning environment focusing on tradition, cultural identity & community. This is one of my favorite museums in Santa Fe & is free to NM residents on Sundays. Do not miss the gift shop, it is one of the best!
