Dear First name / friend,

“What are you longing for, and what are you reaching for?”
            ~Unknown

What do you reach for at the end of a hard day? Is it ice cream, cookies, wine, or Netflix? For me it's cookies; I can eat a whole box in one sitting. Then I justify it by telling myself the cookies will motivate me to work out. (It's okay to laugh.) Now I have nothing against dessert, wine, or Netflix; those are all wonderful things. However, it is a problem when that is all we ever reach for. Let me explain.

On the hard days when I reach for cookies, do I ever stop to ask myself what is it I'm longing for? I can guarantee that I'm not longing for a temporary fix or an added pound or two. I'm longing for peace and reassurance that I have what it takes to get through and conquer my situation. Cookies don't provide that.

What should we do instead? Choose better and reflect on what we're really longing for. Here are some better options:
  • Go for a walk or work out.
  • Listen to a podcast or audible book.
  • Journal
  • Read a book.
  • Call a friend.
Encouragement
Don't sell yourself short by always reaching for the temporary fix. It's an easy “go to” for a reason. It keeps you stuck. Choose better, because you're worth it!
