In 2009, I gave birth to my first child. Our breastfeeding relationship was externally challenged, to say the least. 90% of the difficulties presented could have been prevented with the information and wisdom I've gathered since; the things I didn't know then. As one of my favorite writers oft said, you “do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, (you) do better.”
In 2017, I gave birth to my fifth child. Our breastfeeding relationship was internally encouraged, to say the least. 90% of our flow was protected with information and wisdom that welcomed almost three years of a nursing experience filled with ease. And it is with that (and much more) - as one of my favorite writers oft said - “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.” - Dr. Maya Angelou

Today marks the end of National Breastfeeding Month (August) and Black Breastfeeding Week (August 25-31). In recognition of the struggle it is to manage the work of breastfeeding in a country that provides little protection and legislative advocacy for the nourishment of its tiniest citizens and their incredible mothers and families, for the Black women whose ancestors were denied the right to feed their own and forced to nourish others, for Black women whose mothers were discouraged from breastfeeding them in the 70's and 80's, and for the children of those mothers who may be trying to figure it all out on their own in this climate: This time and this work is dedicated to you.
Hope the information + wisdom below may help you or someone you know, flow well:
There are a plethora of pervasive breastfeeding myths. One of them, is that crying is a newborn's first sign of hunger. If you wait to feed baby until they're crying, you might both end up in tears. Keep baby skin-to-skin and/or very close to you in the early days of getting to know them earthside (preferably unswaddled so you can see their subtle movements) and meet their needs with greater ease.
