We're still a week and a half out from the autumn equinox, but it has felt like the Sun is already slipping out early and coming in late. The downshift into bedtime comes sooner after the evening meal, and waking up in the dark blue to the sliver of a waning moon has been a chore. Even still, I’m someone that cherishes the early morning time. Before the shuffling din of the day begins, there is a pillowy peace. No birdsong, not even distant sounds of traffic. A cool and breathy whisper moves through the branches of the fir and cedar trees outside, and makes the lace curtain lap at the windowsill. The moon herself, a pair of horns or a bowl waiting to be filled.
It is with this present expectancy that we meet the New Moon in Virgo. While summer had us catching our balance at every turn, there has been a distinct change of pace since we entered Virgo season a couple of weeks ago. This time of year brings a different kind of working energy than say Aries season, in that the initiation of new projects, routines, and habits is born from a tested foundation. The pace is more deliberate now, not as sudden or reactive. You have the information you need to make considerable progress on the work that has felt like sludge these last few weeks, maybe even months.
We’ve turned the page, but before we can start anew it will serve us to honor the process of review. Not everything can come into the next chapter, the next phase, or the new timeline. Allow yourself to lean back and digest after taking in so much emotional information all summer. Run ideas through your value filters and eliminate what doesn’t serve you, before trying to organize what does. Let your feelings be witnessed; let them break down and deconstruct so that new perspectives emerge from the process. Be discerning in your attachments. Sometimes working with less inspires our creativity and opens us to an abundance we never would have imagined.
—New Moon in Virgo—
The New Moon in Virgo peaks tomorrow night at 6:49pm, and with her late rise it’s likely you haven’t seen her much at all this week. A new moon is the beginning of a lunation, the start of the next cycle. Tonight and tomorrow are ideal times to step into your next timeline. Close this last chapter and look ahead to the next. Rituals for clearing, literally cleaning house, and cutting ties are especially potent during this moment. A new moon in Virgo in particular is an ideal time to hone in on the emotional information that we have been receiving the last few weeks, and maybe the whole summer. How have your feelings changed over time? Have you noticed any patterns? Or perhaps experiments with new thoughts and feelings are still integrating.
Once digested, what feelings can be eliminated? What has served its purpose and is no longer an asset to you. Let go of everything from the last month that is no longer serving your direction.
How do I know if something serves me?
When we ask ourselves the question, “does it serve me?” we may find that we’re overwhelmed with indecision.
First, what is clear to you? You may not fully know where you’re headed, but you know what you value and maybe what you want.
Does the idea/person/habit in question support/nourish/expand who I am now or who I want to become in the near future?
If the answer is no, let it go.
Virgo is ruled by Mercury, who will station direct on the 15th, so put a little extra focus on clearing your channels of communication. Delete those old emails, clear out your voicemail, and revisit your personal mission statement. Things may start to feel a little more clear over the next couple of weeks, but with all five outer planets still retrograde, it’s going to be a little while until it feels like all the pieces are in the right place. Even though you’re putting in the work now, be patient with the results. There are long seasons ahead, but also magic is still very alive. You may find that things move forward where you never expected and sideways where you thought you had it all figured out. Keep that soft seat and your voice clear. You know how to ride this.
This New Moon makes an exact trine to Uranus which could manifest as feeling emotionally independent and empowered, or being surprised by new and BIG feelings. At the same time, Venus make an exact square to Jupiter, which could nurture a desire for “more” or create a tension between our values and our wants, leading to excess. This is where presence with the process allows us to hold space for both/and.
“I am okay with where I’m at, but I know it’s not where I want to stay. And I choose to take the next step that honors my past and supports my future.”

—Gate 47.6—
When the New Moon is exact, she and the Sun will be in Gate 47.6 —Oppression/Exhaustion. The Gate of Realization. This gate in the Ajna Center in Human Design corresponds to our mental process; how we formulate ideas. In essence, this is the gate where realization comes over time and review of information. It is not necessarily logical, but it pieces the story together like an editor poring over a box of film strips. Realization in this context must consider everything in the box, all of the information that it has access to. Also known as the “mindset gate,” (Curry Parker), it requires trust that the answer will come without knowing exactly how all the pieces will fit together until the end.
In the IChing this hexagram points specifically to the situations that drain our chi or life force, in which we are seeking in a place or time meant for receiving. We exhaust ourselves this way. And when we reach the end of exhaustion, it’s because we have surrendered to the situation. We’ve stopped opposing or trying to force it. We realize that the ropes that bind us can themselves be the keys to making a new start.
Without a leap of faith, we are burdened by the “not knowing.” The collection of information and its lack of organization becomes oppressive, especially in our western culture of immediacy. Avoid any external pressure to act on premature conclusions. Realization is a happening, it is not something you can force or manufacture.
And it will happen. I promise.
