Creative Recovery Circle
following The Artist's Way
- circle with us from the beginning -

We gather on Tuesday, September 12th!
“The resulting pages emerged as a blueprint for do-it-yourself recovery. Like mouth-to-mouth resuscitation or the Heimlich maneuver, the tools in this book are intended as lifesavers. Please use them and pass them on."

Cameron, Julia. The Artist's Way (p. xx). Penguin Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.
Dearest First name / Owlly,

I wanted to send you one more notice before first gathering for Creative Recovery Circle. It isn't too late to join us if you've been considering the opportunity. You can still register here.

Here's a little more information all in one slice for your consideration:
  • What is this invitation? For 12-weeks of creative nurturing & recovery within an intimate circle co-facilitated by Alysa Escobar & Elizabeth Shepley - seasoned & devoted students of The Artist's Way. You'll get weekly virtual support, accountability & connection as you design your Artist's Way journey and practice with morning pages and artist's dates and more!
  • Who is it for? Anyone desiring community & connection while doing the work of The Artist's Way, whether reading it for the first time or dozenth.
  • When do we meet? Tuesdays, from September 12th to November 28th, 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM eastern (zoom opens 30 minutes early for co-working time)
  • What if I can't make those meetups? In the keystone experimental spirit of all things at Owl-Create, we're evolving this path for asynchronous cahoots in addition to the planned real time connection in the same time/same zoom room. We've got a sweet little community space over on the Geneva app where we're learning to connect in pop up audio or video rooms & broadcast rooms in addition to having forum spaces for ongoing discussions to posted topics and chat rooms for text check ins and celebrations. Circle replays will be posted on Geneva within 24 hours of the meetups.
  • Where are the meetings? The formal Circles take place on zoom. Pop-up experiences & other community connections will happen on Geneva. If you want to preview our Home base on Geneva, just hit reply & we'll send you an invitation to poke around. If you decide not to pay & stay, no biggie, no pressure, no judgement, just see yourself out, or send us a message letting us know that you're not planning to stay this round.
  • How much does this cost? We want this to be accessible, so for this first run, we're charging $66 for the 12 week program, which is like paying for two weekly circles and getting the other 10 for free! Not to mention all of the other juicy gifts through the space and connections. Here's the link to join us.
  • How much time will I need to do this? You get to choose. Julia Cameron recommends that the course will “take little more than an hour each day,” so that's one estimate. Various factors will impact the amount of time it takes such as your rhythm with long hand writing for morning pages, your pauses for trailing thoughts, your reading speed and comprehension, your Censor, and on and on. Our circle is designed to give you the most impact for a couple of hours of your attention each week. Circles last for 90 minutes and offer a 30 minute warm up space to gather in zoom before Circle to connect with the material either through facilitator prompts or revisiting your notes or just simply reading the text. You get to choose how much time you give this. There are no good student awards. In fact, this whole process is a whole lot of unlearning the good student stuff and re-orienting with your internal guidance and wisdom.
    • In a superstellar week, a recovering artist might spend half an hour on morning pages every day. Artist's dates could take anywhere from half an hour to 2 or more. If she listens to the chapter via audiobook, that is 45 minutes or so, but she might skim the printed text making note of new insights or reflections. During the skimming with the printed book, she'll take 10-15 minutes to speed through the core exercises, and she might spend a half hour here and there to fit in 3 or 4 tasks from the week. That's maybe 8-9 hours per week with a generous Artist's date. PLUS she's either gathering in Circle or listening to the replay and adding her check-ins in Geneva, adding about 2 hours.
  • What if I get stuck or uncomfortable or get off track? This will most likely happen. Julia calls these creative u-turns, and it is natural. We are coming together here to learn the strategies necessary to stick with it and begin again from where you are and adjust expectations and just see what happens when we keep showing up even though it gets hard and harder. Because then it gets easier, and you don't have to do it alone ever.
  • Life is hectic. How do I know where to focus my resources if I only have a little to give to The Artist's Way? The priorities for The Artist’s Way course are Morning Pages, weekly Artist’s Dates and the reading & core exercises in each chapter. Tasks are a la carte. Of course, if you do all the things all the weeks, you'll see massive transformation. It might be a full time gig. Who doesn't see strides in improvement after 12 weeks of full-time work? You'll also see improvement with any investment you choose to give because you'll have given a little more than you were previously. Your devotion to your intentions for your Artist's Way design is the main consideration. This work is for you.

  • Wait… Who is Elizabeth? Who is Alysa? Who are they to facilitate this circle? Oops! We're so glad you asked!

Elizabeth Shepley is a writer & the lead shenaniganizer here at Owl-Create. She is a resource librarian for creative living, and she brings together people and resources to shake things up when they get stale or stagnant. She's a certified Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coach & Muse Group Facilitator, Therapeutic Arts Life Coach, Shamanic practitioner, Reiki healer, writer, collage artist, graphic designer--maker of fun and pretty things. She keeps returning to The Artist's Way because it offers a foundational toolbox that helps her figure things out that she didn't even know needed attention.

Alysa Escobar is a seasoned performance artist and theater educator. She is an advocate of creative growth and for over three years has been a facilitator for Artist’s Way groups.  With degrees in Theater Education, and Mental Health Counseling, she brings a unique blend of artistic insight and emotional guidance to her role as co-facilitator.

The Artist's Way has been an empowering experience for her and she hopes to share it with others who feel disconnected from what they would like to be creating.  Alysa is grateful to the Artist’s Way process as it has helped her overcome creative obstacles that had kept her from a long time dream of writing a biographical show. This journey led her to create an original musical "Beautiful Broken Piece." With a passion for fostering creativity's intersection with mental well-being, Alysa’s intention is to inspire and guide fellow recovering artists on their path to artistic fulfillment.

See you soon!
