I'm excited to share my design thinking with you… |
Exciting projects are (and have been) in the mix at Folded Poetry! I can't wait to tell you all about MY BIGGEST COMMISSION EVER. |
Before I dive into that, I want to send out a big THANK YOU to everyone who went out and voted for my artwork “Vital Cloud” during the Uproar Public Arts Festival this summer. I didn't end up winning any of the large prizes (juried or people's choice awards), but I did walk away with a Sponsor's Choice Award from the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. Below is Mimi, who presented me with the award, and myself after the award ceremony. |
Fun Fact: Mimi is actually a client of mine and commissioned a sculpture for her home in 2021! (above left) |
I love the suspended iridescent acrylic design idea, and am in the process of using the Vital Cloud photography to apply for a large-scale public art installation in DC! Below is a page from my proposal document: |
Earlier this year, I landed my biggest commission ever! |
During the summer of 2022 I became connected with ArtLifting - an art licensing and commission liaison who exclusively represents artists who have been impacted by disability and/or homelessness. (To learn about my story, check out my website at FoldedPoetry.com!) ArtLifting was able to connect me with a then-potential client, Greystar Real Estate. I was given the specifications for the space (a new co-working space in Denver), the budget (10x my last largest commission!), and the following prompt: |
“The client would like a series of two large-scale wall sculptures which represent a journey to Pike's Peak Colorado.” |
I dove in to design, and came up with the following concept: |
In considering any journey out into nature, rarely is it ever as simple as walking out the door. Plans must be arranged, items packed, timing considered - all while already in a mental space of need: needing stress relief, needing release, needing flow. The needs are met upon arrival where an unwinding occurs and chaos becomes order once again. |
Compression and release are represented through natural elements in this artwork. The chaotic geometry of tree bark unwinds and unfurls into the flowing landscape of Pikes Peak. |
This art installation will occupy the wall behind the concierge desk of the new co-working space in Denver. It dances across twenty-two continuous feet of wall space and is constructed out of medium-density fiberboard. |
The below rendering was created by ESG Architects, the interior architect for this building. |
The following describes the second artwork which is a ‘reflection' of this one, and will occupy the clubhouse space also on the first floor: |
As we reflect on any journey, we tend to remember special moments of particular wonder or emotion. The Journey Snapshots collection identifies “glimpses” from The Journey sculpture and offers them for re-imagination… |
Glimpses from The Journey sculpture are here duplicated, rotated, and tiled together to create a relief wall sculpture. This design approach creates a dialogue between both artworks spanning the entire first floor, and uniquely allows for rediscovery and renewed interpretation of The Journey time and time again. |

This is the first project for which I have outsourced fabrication. I'm working with Ben, a local Durham maker from Silverado Fabricators. |
Fabrication is scheduled to wrap up this month, and the piece will be shipped off to Denver, stored locally, and installed as soon as the construction team is ready for it. |
I've learned a lot throughout this design / fabrication process, and I'm so excited to see these pieces mounted in their final home. Below are several fabrication process photos: |
Remember this project (below)? I'm finally beginning fabrication! |
