Hi, First name / friend! As the leaves begin to change and fall here in my part of the world, it's time for another issue of The Leaflet, your inside look at what's going on in The Proofreader Greenhouse.
We had some great conversations in our community this week, and one of our members even signed her very first contract for developmental editing! New things are growing—yay!
I loved hearing from several of you last week. I invite you to reply to this email and let me know what projects you're working on lately. Let's support each other on our proofreading or editing journey!
Here's what happened in The Proofreader Greenhouse this past week:
We had several interesting, informative discussions in The Trellis, our supportive community for proofreaders and editors:
In our Productivity Tools channel, we talked about one of my favorite tools, the Time Timer.
In the Proofreader Mindset channel, we talked about the resistance that proofreaders and editors sometimes feel when starting something new.
In the Good Catch channel, we saw that even large companies sometimes publish material with major errors. Oops!
In the Random Ideas channel, we had a discussion about LLC versus sole proprietorship, and some Trellis members shared their experiences.
This type of mistake won't be flagged by tools like Grammarly or Microsoft Word Editor (two of the tools I use to double-check all the transcripts I proofread). It takes a human to know that this deposition likely didn't start this late in the day.
One letter makes a huge difference, doesn't it? Let's continue to be diligent as we proofread or edit our clients' files.
Here's a thought-provoking quote about the power of time blocking:
This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor:
Denise Minge Proofreading
The Proofreader Greenhouse asked:
What type of content do you proofread or edit? I proofread transcripts for court reporters.
Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I took Proofread Anywhere’s Transcript Proofreading course, and I've done some training with Stenolytics to learn to use Case CATalyst in proofreading as well.
What is your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? I love the flexibility and being my own boss! I also love the challenge of proofreading in RealTeam.
Do you have any tips to share with other proofreaders or editors? Connect with clients on the platforms you always use and are comfortable with.
