DAY #1: AND WE'RE OFF!

 Turns out, you can balance blood sugar simply by switching up the order in which you consume your foods. 

Instead of getting caught up in counting macros or eating more plants, let’s first do something even simpler.
 
Today, day one of this playful challenge, we want you to practice eating protein before your carbs.
 
Your magic making metabolic habit for today is to practice the art what I like to call P before C: protein before carbs. 
 
By eating protein before any carbs on the plate, you are elevating your body’s capacity to thrive. Think eggs before toast, chicken before rice, meatballs before spaghetti. 
 
Here’s why P before C is so important:
  • Carbs naturally raise blood sugar, so putting protein before carbs blunts the impact carbs have on your blood sugar;
  • Consuming protein before carbs puts guardrails on your “appetite” for carbs, reigning in overt consumption of carbs in isolation;
  • Mindfully stitching together the plate with proteins and carbs ensures you are giving your metabolism more diversity in macronutrients.
Two questions:
  • Q: What do I do about meals where proteins and carbs are mixed together, like smoothies, burritos, bowls? 
    A: No prob; simply make sure the protein is present.
     
  • Q: What do I do when vegetables and fats are on the plate too? 
    A: First of all, give yourself props for a beautiful plate. Add veg and fats in wherever you want to; just make sure the proteins come before—or with—the carbs.

  • Make P before C a game! Ask your family and friends to play along so you're not P before C'ing on your own.
