Patchwork

Hey there, First name / friend! I am so excited to talk to you about another quick game this month. This week, I want to talk about Patchwork. I can't even remember at this point how we heard about this one, but we've played it a lot over the past few years.

Patchwork is a 2-player game. It takes about 20-30 minutes. The strategy is considered light.

Your goal is to create a quilt. You do this by paying for patches and laying them on your quilt (the blank 9x9 board). Above is what an initial set up will look like. The patches are laid randomly around the central time board. Each player gets 5 buttons to start - that's your currency. The wooden mover is placed in front of the 2x1 patch (shown below). Then the player who last sewed something goes first - that's always me. 😂

I get to choose from the first 3 patches. In the picture below I have the option of spending 4 buttons and moving 6 spaces, paying 7 buttons to move 6 spaces, or paying 10 buttons to move 4 spaces. Since I only have 5 buttons to start, I will have to choose the first patch. I pay the buttons and move my time token forward 6 spaces. Then I will place this patch anywhere on my board.

Make sure the wooden mover always moves to the space where you removed your selected patch. The player who is in the back or on top of the other will go next. In the first picture, green would go next. In the picture below, yellow would go next. If a player cannot afford any of the next 3 tiles, they jump over the other player, collecting a button for each space.

A couple things to note:
1. When your mover is on or passes a button on the board, you get to collect as many buttons as are showing on your quilt.
2. Patches can be rotated however you'd like, but must be fully on your quilt.
3. There are 5 single patches on the board. Whoever gets to it first, immediately places that patch on their quilt.
4. Whoever creates a complete 7x7 area first, gets the bonus tile.
5. Empty spaces on your quilt are worth -2 at the end of the game.
6. The game ends when both players reach the center of the central time board.
7. Then you count up your buttons, adding in the bonus and subtracting the missing spaces. Whoever has the most buttons wins! It's totally possible for both players to have negative points. 🙈 Been there!

Here's an example of our completed boards at the end of the game. I'm not going to tell you who won… 🙄 Okay, it was Adam. He literally hasn't won this one in like 2 years (I keep track on BGG Catalog app). I think he's showing off when he knows I'm doing this for the emails or maybe I'm distracted taking pictures. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That's Patchwork! What do you think?

Let me know whenever you try this one! Stay tuned for strategy games in October!

Happy playing!
