Hi, First name / friend. As we enter into October this weekend, it's a good time to be thinking about what we want to accomplish in the last few months of 2023. If you have a moment, please reply to this email and let me know what progress you hope to make by the end of the year.

Here's your inside look at what's been going on in The Proofreader Greenhouse lately. There were some exciting additions this week!

Here's what happened in The Proofreader Greenhouse this past week:
We had several interesting, informative discussions in The Trellis, our supportive community for proofreaders and editors:
  1. In our Productivity Tools channel, we talked about energy givers and energy takers that proofreaders and editors deal with.
  2. In the Proofreader Mindset channel, we talked about how much energy a rocket expends in the first two minutes upon liftoff and compared that to the energy needed to start anything new, especially a proofreading or editing business.
  3. In the Client Care channel, I introduced the hummingbird that recently arrived at my backyard feeder. We compared attracting clients to attracting the hummingbird.
  4. In the Random Ideas channel, we celebrated National Punctuation Day on September 24.

Catch of the Week:

I often see the homophones lead and led (pronounced with a short “eh” vowel) switched. Homophones are words that are pronounced alike but different in meaning, derivation, or spelling.

Let's continue to be diligent as we proofread or edit our clients' files.

If you've followed me for any length of time, you know I love to talk about being productive and managing my time well. Are you interested in time management too?

If so, you might enjoy a new 25-minute video training I've created for you. Just click the green button below to sign up for the free training.

If you're a member of The Proofreader Greenhouse, this training is already available in your My Products tab once you log in to your account. Just look for the green “log in” button in the upper right corner of the TPG website.

The Proofreader Greenhouse asked:
  • What type of content do you proofread or edit? All types of texts, but mainly novels. My favorites are YA, Romance, Contemporary, and Historical Fiction.
  • Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I completed Edit Republic’s course High-Level Proofreading Pro.
  • What is your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? Getting to enjoy the art made by passionate writers and helping improve content.
  • Do you have any tips to share with other proofreaders or editors? TAKE A COURSE! I'm new to proofreading but am already very close to paying off the course I took, and I couldn’t have started without it.

Are you a proofreader or editor who would like to be featured in a future issue of The Leaflet?

PLANT OF THE WEEK:

Satin Pothos

One of my favorite plants, this satin pothos has beautiful variegated leaves and doesn't require much maintenance.

The main tip I'd share about the satin pothos is don't overwater it. I wait until the pot is pretty light and the soil is fairly dry to give him a drink.

If you ever see a satin pothos in person, you'll be amazed at how thick and sturdy the leaves are. Such a fun plant!

Let's keep growing together!
Julie
