Rashida here! When I’m planning to create a fabric collection I often have initial ideas in my mind, but how do I make them come to life? For me this is where moodboards step in. Ask any of the RSS team and they will tell you I’m the moodboard queen! I just LOVE them and they are an essential part of my design process. 

A moodboard is like a big collage that’s made by putting together pictures, colors, patterns, and textures that give a feeling or tell a story. They are a visual brainstorming tool that help you to plan and get inspired, making the process of creating fabrics a lot more fun and creative!

I like to keep it pretty simple and pull images together from Pinterest, around the web or photos that I’ve taken and pull them into Photoshop or Illustrator. The fun part is the arranging! I truly enjoy the process of  deciding what goes where, which images need to go or what type of image is perhaps missing. Sometimes I already have a theme in mind and sometimes I just start by adding images of things that I find inspiring at that time. The possibilities are endless! 

Moodboards can act as a map for creativity because, instead of just thinking about colors and patterns, you can SEE them on the moodboard. It helps you to decide what kind of collection you want to design. If you’re thinking of a sunny, happy theme, one might add bright colors and cheerful patterns to your moodboard. If it's a cozy, winter theme, you could choose warm colors and soft textures.

Moodboards also help me convey my ideas to the rest of the RSS team or a client. It’s a fantastic way to explain a design concept and makes communication easier because everyone can see and understand the same ideas.

 

Like magic wands for creativity, moodboards can also inspire. Looking at different pictures and colors can spark new ideas. It's a creative brainstorming session that helps you to try new things and make unique art. 

You can even create these boards for sewing and quilting projects!  It's like creating a scrapbook of inspiration. When you look at your moodboard, it fills you with ideas and enthusiasm. These images and colors can guide your fabric and design choices, making your sewing or quilting project feel like a delightful adventure. It's a way to capture your creative dreams and turn them into something real, making your sewing experience happy and imaginative!
