Hi, First name / friend. I'm thrilled to report that it's finally starting to look like fall here in North Carolina. In fact, it's supposed to be 41 degrees here tonight. Brrrrr!
We had several interesting, informative discussions in The Trellis, our supportive community for proofreaders and editors:
I interviewed an experienced court reporter who explained the importance of the writer/proofreader relationship. Later in the newsletter, you'll find out how you can watch the interview.
In the Good Catch channel, we talked about a Dr. Seuss quote that's been floating around the internet with a comma error. We broke down the structure of the sentence to explain why the comma isn't needed.
In the Productivity Tools channel, we welcomed October and shared goals for our proofreading and editing businesses this month.
In the Proofreader Mindset channel, I explained how something I learned at choir practice relates to my proofreading business.
Bates stamps (named for Edwin G. Bates) are used to paginate formal documents.
I've seen this error a few times over the years. It likely happens because “Bates” ends with the same letter that begins “stamp.” Both “s” sounds probably weren't enunciated clearly, so my client heard only one of them.
Let's continue to be diligent as we proofread or edit our clients' files.

What type of content do you proofread or edit? Court transcripts
Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I completed Edit Republic's High-Level Proofreading Pro course, as well as Elizabeth Wiegner's Learn How to Be a Transcript Proofreader course.
What is your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? Reading the court cases and getting to know the court reporters and other proofreaders
What causes you the most frustration in your business? My biggest frustration is that I'm not great at nighttime proofreading. I'm a morning person all the way!
Do you have any tips to share with other proofreaders or editors? I love using the free version of Wave for invoicing.
