In June, an un-neutered feral tomcat, later named Spud, was trapped at an apartment building near Seward Park as the 15th out of 22 cats (so far) caught from the area. Many of the cats at that site have suffered from upper respiratory infections, eye infections, injuries from being hit by cars, and congenital defects.
Spud had a special issue—a large bulge along the side of his face that was incredibly painful for him. While under the care of Alley Cat Project, the growing lump on the side of his face turned out to be a massive bite wound abscess that burst and began to drain on its own before we could even get him to a veterinarian. With the help our veterinarian, Dr. Obegi of Allpet Veterinary, and with the help of antibiotics, it began to heal.
Spud was initially described as "super fractious" and aggressive in behavior. But once his pain issue was resolved, despite his initial frailty, timidity, and feral upbringing, Spud gradually warmed up to his experienced foster mom Irene and eventually couldn't get enough attention. At this point, Spud was neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, with a promising future and was on the road to full recovery.
In September, he found a loving home and was renamed Silas. He now lives with another cat named Aster, and they provide each other with companionship while their owners are at work. Silas appears to have adjusted well to his new home and is thriving in his transformed life.
Congratulations to his new family and many thanks to our incredible partners at Feral Cat Spay & Neuter Project (
FCSNP) who help us save so many amazing cats!
