From the Mayor's Desk
We had a Senior September to remember! Thanks to all of our community partners who came to the GICC for our third annual Senior Summit. This was an effort started when our Fulton County District Attorney shared information with local elected officials and law enforcement about the efforts going on within her office to address crime in the county. When her team made a presentation about crimes against our seniors, I knew we had to do more to spread this information. As a result, the Senior Summit was born. This year, we had more seniors and more community participation than ever. Our presenters shared tips on healthy living, fitness, estate planning and more. If you weren’t able to attend this year’s event, be sure not to miss it in 2024!

As we enter into my favorite season and the weather gets a little cooler, bring your blanket and snacks and join us in the parks for our Halloween Movie Series. Our Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has been hard at work after a successful Summer Movie Series to bring more family-friendly entertainment to our community.

Another amazing event coming is up at the end of this month. Our police department has been working diligently to make our Trunk or Treat the best around. We need volunteers – and of course, candy! If you can assist, please reach out to Officer Anthony Paniagua at 404-556-8563 or apaniagua@collegeparkga.com.

From the City Manager's Desk
I am pleased to transmit the 7th installment of the Community Building Leadership Team’s (CBLT’s) Strategic Performance Report (SPR). The SPR showcases activities and information across the full range of College Park’s operations and administration, every two weeks coinciding with the regular meetings of the Mayor and Council. The format and its content are topical based; concise in nature; accented with images and illustrations for more relatable reading; and organized by the alphabetical ordering of offices and departments, which follows a lead topic(s) from the City Manager in the opening pages of the report.

October 2, 2023:Strategic Performance Report

Did you know that we have new Strategic Core Values? At the Regular Session of Mayor and Council on September 18, 2023, it was decided to amend the City of College Park’s Core Values to include the word “Transparency”.

In 2020, the City of College Park revised its five-year Strategic Plan. These values shed light on our vision and mission and provide the foundation for achieving our goals, objectives, and
all related actions. With the addition to “Transparency” being added to the already established core values “Hospitality”,” Equity and Inclusion,” Advancement,” “Leadership,” “Transparency" and Professionalism,” and “Harmony”, completes an acronym, HEALTH. With a positive and memorable acronym, such as HEALTH, it will be an easy reminder of the values that will drive our community builders each day for the City of College Park and those we serve in the community.

“The HEALTH of our community ensures the longevity of our community”.

FIRE DEPARTMENT
The College Park Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) — the official sponsor of Fire Prevention WeekTM (FPW)  for more than 100 years — to promote this year’s FPW campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire preventionTM.” The campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take when cooking to keep themselves and those around them safe.

College Park Fire Department offers these key safety tips to help reduce the risk of a cooking fire.
  1. Watch what you heat. Always keep a close eye on what you are cooking. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  2. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.
  3. Have a “kid- and pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet (1 meter) around the stove or grill and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
The College Park Fire Department is hosting a series of events in support of this year’s FPW campaign, including Fire Station Tours, Elementary School visits and our Fire/EMS Expo that is on October 14th at Charles Phillips Park.

AIRPORT AND GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS

The 4th Quarter of 2023, brings on the opportunity to learn, build technical skills and find solutions. Nevertheless, quarterly meetings resume with Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta international Airport, taking place on October 26th to address ongoing issues and future community needs.

Furthermore, the National League of Cities (NLC) has granted approval for the City to participate in a Local Infrastructure Hub Boot Camp to prepare us for obtaining major grants to improve our City’s infrastructure beginning October 2023 through January 2024.

There is a calculated approach to ensuring the City stays on the cutting edge!

KEEP COLLEGE PARK BEAUTIFUL
In the heart of College Park, a powerful movement for sustainability and community collaboration is taking root. Keep College Park Beautiful, alongside Woodward Academy, orchestrated the inaugural Sustainability Day, transforming classrooms and housing units into opportunities for environmental stewardship. Over 300 pieces of furniture found new homes, fostering a culture of reuse and reducing waste.

But the spirit of community and environmental care didn't stop there. Volunteers gathered on Phoenix Trail, demonstrating the strength of unity and shared purpose. Cleanup Trails Day became a canvas for fostering understanding, forging connections, and amplifying the essence of community engagement. In these efforts, we didn't just pick up litter; we nurtured the roots of a vibrant, caring community.

Moreover, our partnership with Lufthansa Cargo signifies a bridge between College Park and global outreach. Through the dedicated work of Help Alliance, we cleaned Zupp Park together, paving the way for future collaborations. These initiatives, rooted in community service and understanding, define our path toward a sustainable future.
