YOUTH EVENT:

On 6 October, two university clubs, from Wits and UP, competed in a bouldering challenge at the newly built CityRock climbing gym in Irene. Tuks Exploratio and Wits University Mountain Club each had both male and female competitors to show off their skills in competition-style bouldering.

A very well-set collection of problems were put up for the climbers to attempt, each scoring points for their teams. There was fun and good climbing into the night with the winners of the competition walking away with some prizes sponsored by MCSA Youth of both the Johannesburg and Magaliesburg Sections.

Congratulations to each of the competitors, and all winners of prizes! We look forward to the next inter-varsity meet. Happy climbing.

FIRST YOUTH MEET:

The first meet for the MCSA Youth was a hike and conservation meet at Dome Pools in Magaliesburg on 17 September. For some, this was a new experience; hiking and swimming in natural pools, while learning a little more about conservation created opportunity for learning and fun!

We took a walk up from the new Dome Pools parking up to the pools, crossing over streams and marvelling at the new shoots pushing through the recently burnt terrain. After chatting up at the MCSA camping site, we spent a couple of hours down in the pools swimming, clearing crofton, and pushing ourself beyond our perceived limits. Two young members challenged themselves in jumping into the cold waters below.

There were many flora growth of crofton, an extremely invasive plant species, which we had removed. With bags of flower heads ready to be disposed of, and rooted plants left to dry out, we left the Dome Pools cleaner and clearer.

Keep an eye out for more MCSA Youth events coming up, including some more conservation and skills development.
See you there!

We are calling upon all members for contributions for the MCSA's journal for 2023!

The Journal of the MCSA is an annual publication that serves as a record of the mountaineering-related activities of the Club's members. Each year, there are articles and illustrations focusing on the environment, the flora and fauna encountered in remote parts of our country and elsewhere, on search and rescue, and on the history, geology and archaeology of mountain areas. With this extensive range of content, the Journal is also an interesting, informative, entertaining and inspiring work, reflecting the spirit of adventure of the mountaineers and explorers of South Africa.

Guidelines, journal stylesheet, photo template and more documents about the journal can be downloaded from our website below:
