A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator:

Hi, First name / friend. My feet are sore and my belly is still full from all the kettle corn I ate, but my visit to the North Carolina State Fair yesterday was amazing! My favorite part was all the fall nature displays. They even had a small greenhouse for the winning plants (including the first-place Swedish ivy and a gorgeous pineapple plant).

Do you (1) love the county or state fair or (2) avoid it completely? I'd love to hear! Reply to this email and let me know.

Here's what happened in The Proofreader Greenhouse this past week:
We had several interesting, informative discussions in The Trellis, our supportive community for proofreaders and editors:
  1. In the Client Care channel, we discussed the importance of communicating with our clients when we have trouble with file formatting or deadlines.
  2. In the Productivity Tools channel, we talked about email autoresponders and wondered whether they're effective.
  3. In the Proofreader Mindset channel, we admitted that sometimes we feel “done” and can't bring ourselves to do anything productive after a session of lengthy, difficult proofreading or editing work.
  4. In the Random Ideas channel, we shared a podcast episode that explained the benefits of a 5-minute walk on our physical and mental well-being.

Catch of the Week:

I guess it's possible that the meeting was “infernal,” but it's more likely that it was “informal” or “internal.” 😉

The Proofreader Greenhouse asked:
  • What type of content do you proofread or edit? Non-fiction books for self-publishing authors and marketing content for business owners
  • Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? CIEP Proofreading 1 & 2 (passed with Merit)
  • What is your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? Working with women authors who are sharing their incredible experiences and stories, trusting me to fine-tune their final drafts before publishing
  • What causes you the most frustration in your business? Working out how long each project should take so I can keep my availability schedule updated
  • Do you have any tips to share with other proofreaders or editors? I record how long every editing or proofreading task takes me so I can compare my quote (both in terms of pricing and turnaround time) to how long the project actually took me.
Are you a proofreader or editor who would like to be featured in a future issue of The Leaflet?

PLANT OF THE WEEK:

Epipremnum pinnatum

Also called a Dragon's Tail, this is one of my favorite plants.

The young leaves are shaped like elongated ovals, but the mature leaves are forked into three sections (like the tip of a dragon's tail).

Let's keep growing together!
Julie
