October 2023 | Issue No. 41

Hello & welcome to my October 2023 newsletter. In most parts of the country, fall & winter months approaching the end of the year means it's too cold to enjoy outdoor activities. Not in the Southwest! With 310+ days of sunshine & mild temperatures, October is a perfect month for many outdoor sports, including golfing! Albuquerque is home to numerous public & private golf courses & country clubs. If you are a golf enthusiast, here is a recap of some of our finest golfing venues. If you've golfed here, what's your favorite course to play? Is it the course itself or the amenities that keep you going back for more?

Golf in Albuquerque
Golf Digest & Golf Magazine have ranked several Albuquerque golf courses among the best in the country.

The North Course was the first course in America to break the 7000 yard barrier, measuring 7300 yards from the Championship tees. Originally it consisted of 27 holes. The present 9-hole course measures 3333 yards. The North Course hosted the first professional tournament in Albuquerque in 1947 & the NCAA Championships in 1950, as well as the 1953 International Jaycee Junior Championship. Arnold Palmer, JoAnn Carner, Johnny Miller, Kermit Zarley, & Babe Didrickson Zaharias are just a few of the well known people who have played the course.

Arroyo del Oso Golf Course opened in 1965. The Championship course stretches nearly 7,000 yards but is a manageable 6,545 yards Par 72 from the middle tees. Among many desirable features, you'll find large greens, rolling fairways, strategically placed bunkers & three water hazards which meet the needs of intermediate & advanced players alike. In 1981, Golf Digest Magazine rated Arroyo Del Oso among the top 50 Municipal Golf Courses in the nation.

Located just minutes east of Downtown Albuquerque in the Four Hills community, Canyon Club is set among mature trees, rolling hills & elegant homes. The member-owned, private 18-hole championship golf course was the site of the Sunwest Bank Charley Pride Senior Golf Classic on the Champions Tour from 1986 to 1991. The par-72 course stretches from 5,659 to 6,767 yards. In addition to challenging golf, Canyon Club offers year-round recreation & social activities for all ages for their members.

Opened in 2005, the Scott Miller designed Sandia Golf Club Par 72 championship course was developed by the Pueblo of Sandia as part of the Sandia Resort & Casino. The course offers dramatic views of the Sandia Mountains & panoramic views of Albuquerque. The award-winning club features a full size practice range with double tiered all grass teeing area, a 10,000 square foot practice putting green, 48 strategically placed bunkers, short area & newly developed Event Center.

Designed by PGA tour player Bruce Devlin & golf course architect Robert von Hagge, Tanoan Country Club offers 27 holes of spectacular golf. Situated at the base of the Sandia Mountains, the course features mature trees & manicured greens, with well-placed bunkers & numerous water features. Tanoan Country Club earned recognition as one of the finest private membership clubs in New Mexico & was voted “Best of the City for 2010” in  Albuquerque, The Magazine.

Located near Old Town, the Rio Grande River & Route 66, Albuquerque Country Club boasts a private 18-hole golf course featuring tree lined fairways, contoured greens & park-like atmosphere. Their amenities include a putting green, driving range, chipping green, tennis, fitness & swim facilities, as well as a clubhouse. The club proudly hosts events such as the US Senior Open Qualifiers. It is the only walk on course in Albuquerque, offering a course that challenges both amateurs & pros.

Paradise Hills Golf Course in Albuquerque’s Westside was designed by renowned golf course architect Robert “Red” Lawrence. Originally a conventional parkland course, Paradise Hills is transitioning to a more environmentally friendly footprint. The location of the course offers stunning views of the Sandia Mountains & the Albuquerque skyline. Despite its lack of significant slope, it offers plenty of challenge for any skill level. Paradise Hills Golf Course is open year-round from sunup to sundown (actual hours vary).

Opened in 1980, Ladera Golf Course features spacious greens, a broad teeing area, large driving range tee, practice putting greens & four lakes. Located on the West Mesa of Albuquerque, the views of the Sandia Mountains to the east & the volcanoes to the west enhance your experience on this course.
Ladera measures 7,107 yards from the championship tees, 6,618 from the regulation tees with a Par 72 & 5,066 yards from the forward tee, which also has a Par 72. The course includes a 9-hole Executive Course that stretches 2,053 yards from the men's tees & 1,852 yards from the women's tees.
