THE PURPOSE-DRIVEN BUSINESS BOOM

Hi First name / there,

It has been exciting watching the rapid expansion of the purpose-driven business landscape and community in Australia over the past ten years.

Along with a boom in the number of businesses identifying as ‘purpose-driven’ has been an enormous ‘raising of the bar’ when it comes to what purpose means and how it manifests in different organisations.

Remember when being a responsible business was about not having sweatshops, maybe having one woman on your board and buying carbon offsets to masquerade as ‘climate neutral’? Things move quickly in this space and we're here for it.

Today, the conversation is still about doing less harm, but it has evolved into a drive to do as much positive transformation as possible, as quickly as possible.

What we love about Purpose is seeing a thriving ecosystem of organisations doing business with each other collaborating to turbocharge their impact.

At last year's event, 4 Pines brewery met seaweed-loving Sea Forest. It was a match made in heaven. In support of the amazing work Sea Forest is doing, providing their SeaFeed product to livestock to reduce methane emissions by up to 98%, a ‘Why Is There Seaweed In My Beer’ Tasmanian Pilser was created, with donations from sales of the beer going to 4 Pines’ 1% for the Planet fund to the Sea Forest Foundation

At Purpose five years ago, Joel Hanna (then Xero) met Anne Ascharsobi (who had been working at Google Ventures) as co-panelists, and what transpired was a gear shift at Xero to ramp up their sustainability efforts, bringing Anne on to build the practice. This was pivotal in helping to build sustainability capability for Xero’s 3 million customers.

AV1 who worked with us on our very first 200-person-capacity event in 2015 were so inspired by what they saw, that they embarked on becoming a B Corp, and were the first AV company in the world to do so.

No man, woman or business is an island. Business does not happen on its own and we’re all part of this inspiring, interdependent, continually evolving, living, breathing ecosystem

A NEW NORMAL
DAY 2 OPENING PLENARY

We hear from three very different businesses about the boundaries they are pushing for what we consider ‘ normal’. Through small tweaks that come to be accepted as a new cultural norm, they are creating seismic shifts.

Featuring:

Jess Miller - Director, A New Normal/Finding Infinity. Finding Infinity is an organisation dedicated to speeding up the world’s transition to self-sufficient cities through creativity and consulting.

Brooke Roberts  - Co founder and co-CEO, Sharesies. Sharesies is an empowering money app with over half a million investors who’ve collectively invested more than $2 billion.

Andy Miller - Co-founder and CEO, Heaps Normal. Heaps Normal are on a mission to change Aussie drinking culture. In just their second year of business, Heaps Normal - a zero alc beer, outsold all beers nationally - from both the alcoholic and non-alc categories.

How Purpose Shapes Our Decisions

Designed for senior leaders and intrapeneurs in large organisations, this session will explore the relationship between purpose and governance. We will delve into the complexities of purpose, not as a tagline or mission statement, but as a compass, a place to turn when decision-making becomes difficult and a tool for governance. By working in small groups and learning from each other, we hope that participants will leave feeling supported, connected and energised to keep building purpose into their organisation’s governance.

Geraldine Chin-Moody, Non-Executive Director and Advisor, Founder, 5H Values Capital. Geraldine is a Non-Executive Director at Future Super and Relationships Australia (QLD) and the Chair of the ANU Centre for Asian-Australian Leadership.

Gauri van Gulik, Co-founder and Chair, Multitudes Foundation and Executive Coach. Gauri is the co-Founder and Chair of Multitudes Foundation, which was created to support political changemakers building more inclusive, human and hopeful politics in Europe

Richard Boele, Chief Purpose Officer, KPMG To say Richard is passionate about human rights is something of an understatement. Richard has spent most of his work life championing the causes of the vulnerable and under-represented in a way that few do, most aptly demonstrated in almost 15 years running his own human rights consultancy, Banarra

Nyk Loates, Purpose Practice Lead, KPMG
Nyk Loates is a Management Consultant with over 20 years’ experience in facilitating and designing collaborative workshops to help shape strategy and drive transformation and change.

our partners: INGRAINED FOUNDATION

For the community, by the community: why a brewery started a Foundation.

Since brewing their first beer in 2009, Stone & Wood have been reimagining how to brew with purpose.
Five years ago, the company set up their public ancillary fund, the Ingrained Foundation. This unique model allows them to secure funds not just from the company behind it, but from the broader business and philanthropic community. Since launching in 2018, Ingrained has donated over $2 million to grassroots community organisations, while establishing an impact investment portfolio in parallel.

In recent times, they’ve been interrogating their why and their theory of change. Their homeland, the Northern Rivers region, has had a tumultuous few years with floods and fires hammering the area. It has acted as an incubator of sorts for Ingrained, and they’ve moved to deepen their focus on the hyperlocal community around them, understanding this is where they can provide the most impact.

InGrained have been able to work with agility and collaboration, not just blindly handing out grants. As they move into the next chapter of their impact journey, introducing multi-year partnerships and a fresh brand (coming soon) they are continuing to listen to their community, and demonstrating reciprocity, to really support their region to thrive.

This is what purpose looks like. See more here.

Purpose Conference is proud to be working with InGrained and Stone & Wood for our 2023 Conference.

OUR PARTNERS: THE COMMONS

If there’s something that the last few years has taught us, it’s how we like to work. As a remote-first team, we’re spread across the country, often working from home (in a room that might double as a laundry/a bedroom/a sunroom/the kitchen).

We appreciate the flexibility but we also love stepping into a dedicated, beautifully-designed and socially-responsible space when it calls for it. We call The Commons our office-away-from-home. We love the flexibility, the aesthetic, the comfort, the tech. The fact they’ve contributed $1.1mill+ to NFP and Social Enterprises across the country is just the cherry on top. They are a B Corp themselves and some of their impressive members include Change.org, Who Gives A Crap, BCorp, Edge Impact and Compass Studio

With multiple locations across Sydney and Melbourne, perhaps you’d like to join us at the Commons. See what all the fuss is about here.

THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS
