create space for yourself.

I'm a day late with our weekly newsletter because I just got back from presenting at the Institute on Teaching and Mentoring

I'm totally inspired by all of the Ph.D. students in my session in which we discussed whether it truly is possible to “do it all” … especially if it means trading time for your health.

Great question to ponder, especially as you're starting out.

How do you create balance? How do you figure out what's most important? How do you structure your time so that you can be productive and care for your needs?

I always joke with our scholars about needing (and wanting) a magic wand! There are no easy answers, and really, it's up to each one of us to discover the answer(s) that make the most sense.

It's why we're checking in with you. Holding space for you to share what's coming up. Everyone's experience is unique, but together, we can help carve out a shared path.

This week Allison reflects back to her first year in grad school and remembers experiencing a range of conflicting feelings and emotions. And Alexis weighs in on how hard it can be when you're away from home, but that making new connections in your community can help.

Log into our McNair space and leave a comment - let us know what you're experiencing so far. Your presence here is valued. When you contribute, you help lift each other up along the way.

reflections from
my 1st year in grad school

“I was trying so desperately to be someone I wasn’t. To hide my background and blend. To be “normal.” I would often wonder if anyone noticed what I fraud I felt like inside.”

I've learned that making connections within my new community has helped me feel more at home here.”
