Toronto, ON, November 16, 2023 – We are excited to launch the Black Screen Office’s Research and Action Centre to combat anti-Black racism in Canada’s screen industry. The Research and Action Centre is a one-stop source for tools, training and customized guidance to achieve meaningful strides towards equity. From office culture, to content creation, to industry policies, the Research and Action Centre has the tools industry professionals need to make an impact.
Since our founding in 2020, the BSO has conducted landmark research studies exploring the screen industries’ relationship with Black and marginalized communities. "Our Research and Action Centre mobilizes BSO’s evidence-informed research into real action against anti-Black racism and towards greater equity,” says Joan Jenkinson, the Executive Director of the Black Screen Office. “Our goal is to reach everyone in Canada's screen industries, whether on set, behind a corporate desk or at the policy tables, to inspire and support them in their efforts to engage with Black and marginalized communities.”
The Research and Action Centre has a wealth of free resources. In addition, there are fee-based tools to gain a deeper understanding of BSO's research, connect the research findings to the user’s unique context, and to implement actionable plans and policies to combat anti-Black racism effectively.
“By focusing on actionable research findings and offering a wide range of educational and professional development options, we expect the Research and Action Centre to become an invaluable resource underpinning the fight against anti-Black racism in the screen industries,” says Jenkinson.
