DECEMBER 2023
NDIS review released | Vyvanse shortage grows | Autism & ADHD Assessments Available | Dr Andrew Leech WA's GP of the Year | More help for Great Southern families | Free social story template: My new teacher | Holiday meds | Nurturing neurodiversity | CliniSibs Program

It is such a crazy busy time of year for everyone! Teachers are exhausted, kids are DONE and there is always so much on.

The release of the NDIS review yesterday includes major reform of the disability ecosystem outside the NDIS, with States agreeing to provide more and expanded services for people with disability, both those on the NDIS and those not eligible for it.

As a parent, I know the struggle to find $10,000 to $20,000 per year to privately fund occupational therapy, speech pathology, educational assessments and tutoring while advocating for accommodations at school.

You do what you need to for your children.  But I know we - and so many families - have haemorraghed financially and emotionally as we have for fought for support for our kids across complex and confusing systems.

I sincerely hope these foundational supports will extend to support for children who have not been eligible for individual funding through the existing education, health or disability systems.

This includes children with neurodevelopmental conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, developmental coordination disorder, communication disorders, tic disorders and ADHD.

As well as medical conditions such as congenital heart disease and epilepsy.

And finally, a HUGE thank you to every incredible Mum, Dad, school psychologist, teacher, principal, therapist, practice manager, GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician who has reached out with support and encouragement this year.

Enjoy the holidays, I'm looking forward to spending time at the beach with our kiddos.  Until the next update,
Pia

Finding help just got easier for families living in Western Australia's Great Southern region with the launch of a pilot rural paediatric health hub called The Kids Hub.

You can help Kate to make more hospital bags by purchasing The Darcy Effect merchandise.

INQUIRY INTO CHILD DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

Image item

The Select Committee into Child Development Services in Western Australia provides compelling evidence for urgent action and immediate funding from the State Government to address long waitlists and access.

With WA agreeing to provide more foundational supports as part of NDIS reforms we need to see immediate action.

We need the right supports, at the right time in the right place so our children can reach their potential - whatever that may look like for them.  We can't afford to wait any longer.

FREE TEMPLATE
free social story template:
my new teacher
Image item

Moving to a new classroom, new teacher and maybe new classmates can be worrying for some children.  I've used this social story with my children to help prepare them for this transition over the school holidays when uncertainty can build.

I'm neither a psychologist nor graphic designer but it's worked for us!  If you are able to get photos of the new classroom and teacher that can be helpful but I've added stock photos in case you can't.

Open the template here to change any of the text or images to suit your child's needs. You will need a free Canva account.

MEDICATION
don't forget: medication for holidays
Image item

If you are travelling interstate or overseas for the holidays, don't forget to check on any prescription medications that may have special rules about when and where they can be dispensed.

This is often the case with Schedule 8 drugs which includes ADHD stimulant medications like Ritalin, Dexamphetamine or Vyvanse.

You may need special permission from your paediatrician or psychiatrist for your chemist to dispense medications early.  Make sure you make any requests well in advance so you don't have any last minute issues ahead of your holidays.

MEDICATION

ADHD WA emailed members yesterday about the major shortage of prescription medication Lisdexamfetamine, most commonly sold under the brand name Vyvanse.
