Random Fact:

Sharks have to keep moving to survive.
O.K., so that's not entirely true. Not all sharks have to keep moving so that oxygen-rich water flows over their gills (some can use their respiratory system by pumping their pharynx). But, sharks DO have to keep swimming to avoid sinking to the bottom of the water column. This ability to move up and down freely in the water column is one of the extraordinary adaptations of sharks, even if it means they have to be in constant motion.

Sharks are able to move easily between varying depths in the water (unlike bony fish which tend to be restricted to certain depth ranges and can even die if they get too far out of what their bodies can conform to).

You might be wondering how this relates to surviving the Holidays (yes, I'm using a shark analogy for surviving the holidays!).

Why is it important to keep moving?  Especially when you've already been running around crazed for the holidays?

The importance is that you need to do some movements FOR YOU.

Yes, I am always pro relaxation/meditation, breathing, epsom salt bath time, etc., but directed movement FOR YOU (especially your Physical Therapy exercises - haha!) is just as important for your mental and physical health.

With that in mind, the first video for this newsletter is the first in our series of Mobility Moments (for you!).

These 3 movements are good to do throughout your day, especially if you've been sitting too long, or running around shopping, decorating, or just stressing about your list of things to do.

And if you don't follow us on social media yet, now is the time to keep up with all of our Mobility Moments that will be released to help keep you sane over the upcoming season.

And just a bonus for those who might have missed our previous posting:
Shower Cleaning (to protect your spine). Prepping for guests does not have to mean sacrificing your spine health. Next month we might have some wrapping and gift lifting tips, so keep reading...

Podcast Season 1 has concluded with the last episode focusing on why I even started doing a podcast in the first place.

Ciffnotes Version: People are like puzzles to me. As much as I like hanging out with all of my patients all of the time, I want to actually figure out where the issue came from and how we can prevent it for the future. Unfortunately, as I fight for my patients and their care, what I encountered in our healthcare system over the last 20 years of my practice is that we are more focused on "treat and street" as my friend Julie says, and not on prevention or figuring out why something happened in the first place.

So, I wanted to know if this was just me, or if other healthcare practitioners had experienced the same thing. I wanted to know what their ideas and thoughts were, or how were they working to try and change a system that seems focused on keeping people sick and not helping them heal for happy and healthy lives.

Over the past year I've gotten to interview numerous amazing clinicians, with each offering invaluable information and nuggets for patients. I say it every time, but if you haven't listened in, NOW is definitely the time (especially while you are making cookies, addressing holiday cards, or cleaning, it makes the perfect background of health information!). Listen below:

Look for Season 2 coming in 2024 with an emphasis on specific conditions and the patient experience as they navigate through the health care system.

The Gift of Health:
It may not be the first thing that pops to mind when you're looking for stocking stuffers, but one of the greatest gifts you can give your friends, family, etc. is the "Gift of Health" and we have Gift Certificates now available for purchase just in time for the holiday season.  If you know someone in pain (or anyone who you think would benefit from treatment), message today to purchase a Physical Therapy session!
