November 2023 Newsletter
Hello! It is hard to believe that American Thanksgiving is only a few days away since it feels like we were rambling around the desert so recently (it was actually back in January…). Even though it feels like this year went by way too fast, the cold weather of autumn means that we will be back in the desert soon, this time to finish up some photography work for a big project we have in the works for next year.

Since I am writing casual monthly updates on our blog now (see below), I will keep this introduction short. This newsletter includes links to those new articles on our blog, photo things we think you might enjoy, and some of my new photos of Alaskan wildlife and birds. (Ron's new portfolio ebook with Alaska photos will be in your inbox soon.)

I'll also be sharing details about two webinars soon. In the meantime, you can save the dates: Composition and Visual Design for Nature Photographers with the Lehigh Valley Photo Club on December 14 ($10) and a webinar with Ian Plant on December 18 (no cost, registration required). Ian and I will be chatting about the challenges and benefits of trying new genres of photography--fun! Hope to see you at one or both of these sessions.

Cheers,

Recent Articles

Most of the articles I have written and shared over the last year have been for publications that are behind a paywall. For a lot of reasons, I have decided to put most of my future writing time into re-building our blog with weekly articles, including a mix of practical advice, updates, and working through some bigger ideas about photography. I know that this is a long list of long articles (reading for the long Thanksgiving weekend, maybe…?). I will be better about mixing in some shorter pieces and sharing them more frequently in the future.

If you would like to receive these individual blog posts in your inbox as they are published, look for the “sign-up” option on our blog page (right sidebar near the top).

Things You Might Enjoy…

Brews n' Views: I enjoyed joining Eric Bennett, James Rodewald, Paul Bowman, and Mike DiMeola on YouTube for a casual, sometimes silly, and sometimes serious chat about nature photography (and beer). The episode features some embarrassing photos of me, lots of laughs, and a discussion about ten photos from other photographers that I have recently enjoyed.

Michele Sons just released her beautiful, insightful, and practical new ebook, The Art of Fog. I bought it recently, am about halfway through reading it, and totally recommend it. It would be a good holiday gift for yourself.

California Condors: Thanks to a link shared by Anna Morgan (after we enjoyed seeing wild condors soaring over Zion Canyon together), I went down a rabbit hole about the Yurok tribe's work to re-introduce condors to their native range in the Pacific Northwest. You can read about the recent release of three condors on this Facebook page, see them preening or eating or resting live on this webcam, and read about the background on the project here.

Battling a Green Glacier: This is an interesting article about how the native redcedar tree is overtaking grasslands in Nebraska and what conservationists and ranchers are doing to restore and preserve the grassland habit for wildlife and birds.

Alder Trees: On his great blog, Michael Frye shared this interesting article about why alder trees stay green through autumn. If you are out photographing fall colors and see green leaves on the ground, they might be alder leaves.

Talor Stone is doing a final fundraising push to support her Greenland documentary project. If you are looking to make an end-of-the-year charitable contribution, consider this project (we have made two donations for the project).

Canon 200-800 lens: Mirrorless camera technology is allowing camera companies to create all sorts of interesting lenses, like this new one from Canon. This could be a fun lens for any Canon user who likes using really long focal lengths (like us!).

Ten Classic Black and White Photo Books: I love adding photo books to my collection and am going to try to find some of the entries on this list from QT Luong. First one I will be looking to buy: the book by Bradford Washburn.

Eric Bennett's New Book: The pre-order period for Eric's new book ends in two weeks. He has been hoarding photos for this project for years and I am excited to see them in print soon. Based on the quality of his first book, we recommend buying this second one.

Photo Portfolios to Enjoy: George Kalantzes, Brent Clark, and Dorin Bofan

New Photos from Alaska

This is a small selection of my wildlife photos from Alaska. You can view the full gallery here. Ron will be sharing his landscape and wildlife photos from Alaska soon, so stay tuned.
