A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator:

Hi, First name / friend. I was absolutely thrilled this week to discover that my rex begonia is flowering! I didn't even know that these plants flower! I guess this guy is happy where he is (in a south-facing window getting lots of afternoon sun).

Have any of your houseplants ever flowered unexpectedly? I'd love to hear about it! Feel free to reply to this email and let me know.

Here's what happened in The Proofreader Greenhouse this past week:
We had several interesting, informative discussions in The Trellis, our supportive community for proofreaders and editors:
  1. In the Productivity Tools channel, we talked about an add-on for Google Sheets called StaySorted that alphabetizes your data automatically, even after adding new rows. This tool helps me keep track of all the names and acronyms in the transcripts I proofread.
  2. In the Proofreader Mindset channel, we talked about a reminder in The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson that we can't go straight from Plant to Harvest. There has to be Cultivation (time) in the middle.
  3. Speaking of The Slight Edge, I mentioned this amazing book in the Worth Reading channel. I was so sad when I had to return it to the public library this week.

Catch of the Week:

Errors like this occur because the second syllable of both words is unstressed and sounds almost identical. Since the sentence refers to one student, “freshman” (singular) is correct, not “freshmen” (plural).

This type of error also occurs frequently with “laymen” and “layman.” They sound so similar, don't they?

There's a brand-new interview in Sprout Academy, and it's available to ALL members of The Proofreader Greenhouse!

This video interview with experienced proofreader Mary Cantor shows us how a proofreader can go from novice to knowledgeable by keeping a few things in mind from the start of our business journey.

If you're a TPG member, this resource is already available in your account

The Proofreader Greenhouse asked:
  • What type of content do you proofread or edit? I proofread website/email/blog/social media/etc. content for online businesses and entrepreneurs.
  • Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I completed the Proofread Anywhere General Proofreading course, as well as various other courses on grammar and style guides. I'm currently taking a course on the AP Style guide.
  • What is your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? I love learning new things, whether it's to better myself as a proofreader or simply learning new topics from the businesses I proofread for. It's so fun!
  • What causes you the most frustration in your business? When I can't figure out if a style guide rule applies or not, or when style guides contradict each other.
  • What tip would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors? Don't be afraid to use grammar tools/macros/other software! They help reduce human error while also speeding up the proofreading process. My go-to combination is ProWritingAid and PerfectIt (until I can properly master macros).
Are you a proofreader or editor who would like to be featured in a future issue of The Leaflet?

PLANT OF THE WEEK:

Cebu blue pothos

I have five types of pothos in my collection, and this one might just be my favorite (shhh . . . don't tell the others).

The word “blue” in the name is a bit deceiving, but it definitely has a different hue than my other pothos plants.

This guy would thrive growing up a moss pole or a trellis, but I have him in a hanging pot. He seems pretty happy.

Let's keep growing together!
Julie
