As the air grows crisp, we once again find ourselves grateful for the wonderful community that surrounds us. Each fall, your generosity shines through in the pumpkins you donate, and this year has been no exception. We're excited to share a glimpse of how these colorful treats brighten the lives of our animals on these chilly, damp days.
A Peek into Our Pumpkin Party
Once the pumpkins are distributed, each animal showcases it's unique pumpkin-eating style. The pigs, ever enthusiastic, devour them whole, rind and all. In contrast, our chickens and turkeys are more meticulous, pecking away the seeds. If the pigs don't get it first, the chickens will eat all the flesh, leaving only the rind behind. The cows and sheep display a range of preferences - cows often opt for the succulent insides, while sheep contentedly nibble on what's left by their larger or quicker companions.
Why Pumpkins? More Than Just a Treat
Apart from being a sustainable way to recycle your fall decorations, pumpkins offer significant health benefits to our livestock. They are a fiber-rich addition to a Pig’s, cow’s, and sheep’s diet, enhancing digestive health and providing essential nutrients like Vitamin A for immune support. Chickens and turkeys not only enjoy the flesh but also gain immune-boosting benefits from the seeds, which act as a natural dewormer.
