Welcoming the Winter Solstice,
Gratitude Ritual and
Tools for Holiday Grief

The Winter Solstice is upon us for those here in the northern hemisphere and with it marks the official start of winter guiding us to go within for inner wisdom. As a medicine woman, I am in continual study and admiration of the four seasons and elements. These are my teachers and connect me to the cycles of life. Winter brings the cold, asking us to hibernate, feel deeply, embrace the darkness of our shadow self while reminding us to nourish our bodies with warming herbs, teas, soups and good company. This time of the year ask us to look for the light within, to get comfortable with the icky emotions asking to be heard.

As the natural world withers and dies, we are reminded of the sacred process of releasing. Grief is also present to teach us with the holiday season and winter. To guide us to the depths of our hearts to mourn what we have lost, whether parts of ourselves, loved ones or opportunities no longer meant for us. Winter is the time to honor the emotions that have been frozen, to remember each part of us is a unique snowflake of beauty like no other. Allow yourself to thaw out your stored pain and release it this season!

Welcoming the Winter Solstice
A Gratitude ritual for the season!
Ready to start the winter season with a BANG, and get a boost of light to carry you into the darker days of the year? Try out this ritual on the winter solstice December 21st - 22nd.

Get a white candle, piece of paper and cup or container with clean water. Create a comfortable space for you to connect with yourself. Maybe that includes a cup of cacao, incense or essential oils, and meditation music to set the container. Set up an altar or an area to place the ritual, this can be simple or elaborate.
  • On one side of the piece of paper, write at least 10 things you're grateful for.
  • On the other side write, 5 things you're grateful to release in the winter season. Be ready to release them!
  • Place the white candle on the altar and water in front. Before placing them call in your ancestors of the light, spirit guides and, or higher self. Ask for the spirit of winter to guide you for the highest good and alignment.
  • Read the list out loud in front of altar.
  • Fold the piece of paper in half towards you, and again fold it towards you until it's small enough to fit inside the container of water on the altar.
  • Place the paper inside the water, if you haven't already light the white candle. Leave the paper in the water until the candle goes out. After..
  • Place the water and list in the freezer.
  • Leave for 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months, no longer. Connect with your intuition and guides for the timeline best for your highest good.
  • When you're ready, take out the freezer and thaw out the list.
  • When the water is liquid, offer to the Earth and ask the spirit of winter to bring these intentions to light in the spring.
  • Take the piece of paper with the list, dry it and after burn it. Ask the sun to illuminate your intentions with the light to shine in the spring and summer. If not possible to burn, wrap it in something white and offer it to the trash.

Tools for Holiday Grief
3 tips to support you this season
  1. Don't do it ALONE. It's important that we remember to ask for help. If our friends, family or loved ones can't support us, go to your spirit guides. Light a white candle and ask for your ancestors of the light, higher self and guides to protect you as you grieve. Maybe you feel alone on the physical plane but never forget there is an ARMY OF LOVE around you at all times.
  2. Spiritual Hygiene cleanse your energy and space fluently to help move the sadness that can collect negative energy and attract unwanted thoughts. Whether you burn incense, take daily salt showers or herbal baths. Cultivate a process to cleanse and release at least 1x a week.
  3. Cord Cutting Are there people, places or situations you're holding on to that no longer serve you? Try a cord cutting meditation. Imagine the people or situations that are difficult for you. With your higher self image cutting the energy away. Allowing space for you to release and come back to your power.
