For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall
be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God,
Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.

Let us bless his holy name …

On January 1, the Church does not call us to resolutions or fresh intentions , but rather to meditate on and celebrate the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus.

January 1 is the eighth day after Christ's birth. According to Jewish custom, boys were presented in the synagogue, named, and circumcised on this day. In Jesus's day, names possessed revelatory or prophetic significance. Jesus means "The Lord saves."

On January 1st, we celebrate his most holy name.
Breathe

Inhale: bless the Lord, O my soul

Exhale: bless his holy name

of Psalm 103:1

Pray
Almighty God, your blessed Son fulfilled the covenant of circumcision for our sake, and was given the Name that is above every name: Give us grace faithfully to bear his Name, and to worship him with pure hearts according to the New Covenant; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Consider
God has also called you by name (Isaiah 43:1) and given you a new identity in him. As you enter into this new calendar year, take a few minutes to meditate upon which of these names you need to sit under in the coming months:
  • Beloved (Isaiah 43:4)
  • Chosen (Colossians 3:12)
  • Known (Ephesians 2:10)
  • Seen (Psalm 44:18)
  • Held (Isaiah 41:10)
  • Child (1 John 3:1)
  • New (2 Corinthians 5:17)
  • Friend (John 15:15)
  • Heir (Romans 8:17)
  • Saint (1 Corinthians 1:12)
  • His (1 Corinthians 12:27)
  • Free (Galatians 5:1)
